I've been trying to expand out of support. What lane should I play?

I've been trying to expand out of support recently. I tried playing jungle for a couple days and I'm decent at it, but it's not much fun. I've been eyeing top lane, and I recently bought Shen because I got a Pulsefire Shen skin shard. Should I try top lane? If so, do you have any tips/beginner champs? If not, what lane should I expand into?

Also, I really want to play Shen so if I do end up going into top, when should I start playing him? If I'm not going top I'll just learn supp Shen.

I think you should play a lot of different positions, to know the skills of other champions. It will be good for the position you choose later. If you intend to play the support position as your main job, then you should play AD Carry and Jungle to learn knowledge from those 2 positions. I believe it will improve your support.

Personly i would recommend either adc or jungle. Jungle is a role quite simmular to support and most supp mains enjoy it, you on the other hand if you dont then i would advise adc, because as a support main you know what you want from your adc, and also you should know how to play together with your supp.

I can play ADC but it's not a fun role. I'm tired of getting **** on by all the other lanes since ADC and support are so underleveled. I know that ADCs can be strong but you need to able to dish out some insane DPS to hold your own against any other role besides support. Thanks for the advice though! Maybe I'll look into playing ADC sometime in the future.

I'd say try to play champions you'd enjoy. It really doesn't matter what you play if you don't even enjoy playing that champion. It's just going to become a disaster.

Mid is most similar to Support but also the most demanding. Imo if you dont like Jungle you won't like mid as there's a TON to learn about the lane and there's a ton of macro.
Top Lane is pretty isolated for the most part and all about trading and winning lane. If you don't win lane as Top it's pretty sucky. I recommend Lane Bullies as they are also pretty easy to learn. is a personal favorite but he's going to evoke a really different playstyle than a support champion. is also great and if you play tanks, you can also run top or and then the lane will be less about all-ins and more about poking. Other beginner champs to Top are and . It all depends on what you're looking for.

I wouldn't play a champion just because you got a skin for them, if you enjoy Shen and are good at him, you really won't lose much to pick him up as your first champion.

Awesome! I've always been interested in learning Shen because of xPetu, but I think I'll hold off on him until I get a little more experience. I like playing Karma so I'll look at some Karma top builds. I might buy Mordekaiser because I feel like he's very strong right now. Thanks for the advice!

:) - just note that Karma Top (As far as I know) is pretty similar to support. You also won't learn the skill set you will need for Shen as Karma is a ranged harass champion while Shen is a melee tank. Mordekaiser is a damage heavy bruiser who is definitely strong and his trading pattern will be extremely different to Shen's.
Matchup experience is more of understanding what the champion does as opposed to how to counter it especially since playing Ranged harass like Karma will be a completely different playstyle. Not only will you adjust your playstyle, your enemy will too, and their build will also be different so it will give you an inaccurate account to what you will face as Shen.
If you're eager to get into Shen, he's not too hard so I'd encourage you to go for it, you can also play Sion, Kled, or Maokai as they are similar to Shen but I wouldn't think any significantly easier.

I'd definitely recommend mordekaiser, if you can hit his Q you've basically learned the champion. Garen is slightly more match up orientated but still easy.

Thanks! I just bought Mordekaiser before I read this comment and played a game against Yorick. Didn't go so well but I want to learn him since he seems strong.

That's not a great match-up for morde, you should read some guides. Once you get better he's really fun to play.

Is Illaoi a bad matchup for Morde? Every guide I see says it's a even matchup, but I have really bad problems with her poke and she always gets first tower at 12-15 min.

Illaoi is a bad matchup for pretty much anyone. The key is to dodge her E and tentacles. Once your able to do this the matchup becomes easy as hell, since you can punish her pre 6 by doing this. At level 6 just be careful of her all in potential and play slightly safe.
