I personally like the burst and then leave type of top lane champs like Pantheon or Wukong but it is all up to you and what you want your playstyle to be. Basically most champs can be used top lane successfully if you know how to use them

A shoutout should be given to Shen. These recent patches haven't done him well, but he is still one of the most powerful champs to be placed in the lane. The thing that makes him great is tchat his ultimate Stand United gives him a global presence on the map. He is a splitpush god. He has a high learning curve, however, and there is no shortcuts to learning him. You just have to grind out as much practice as you can. Dr. Mundo is a sustain god and can 1v1 forever. Another really oppresive top laner is Yorick. Every champ has their drawbacks. A champ who can win lane usually is bad in a team fight and vice versa. The current meta is more geared to midgame, so look more for the champs that will win the lane.

I've been kicking alot of *** in normal games as Sion.

Hes relatively easy to play at my mrr (silver 4) and people dont respect his power very much, and on top of that dont know how to play counter champions very well so even if they pick Fiora who on paper should do better I still kick their ***es quite alot.

So my advice would be to not look at whats top tier/meta at the moment but try a bit of everything and see what you like best.

Its just good to have an overall idea what you may be facing but when it comes to your own pick I'd say dont look too much into details at first.

Sion is considered tier 5 yet I still beat tier 1-2 champs so especially when your new in a lane I wouldnt take tier lists and that sort of stuff to seriously.

Like Orrvaa said, it depends on what you're interested on playing. If you're looking to improve on top lane, a good champion to start with would be Garen. His abilities are very simple and his passive allows you to virtually stay in lane until death. If you're looking for an overpowered pick for the meta right now, I would recommend Dr. Mundo or Sion, as they are fairly easy to play and can scale hard into the late game.

There are a lot of good champions for top lane, you should make your question more specific, what do you love to play?
