What is a Good Startup Rune Set?

Hi, I am very new to the game and I'm completely lost with all these runes to buy... I'm about to hit level 20 so I want to wait and buy the tier 3 runes.

The question is, which runes should I buy? I would like to be able to play a variety of champions and roles.

Thank you in advance for your answers. :)

I made a few huge mistakes when buying my first lot of runes, so I'd be glad to help you out. The best rune set to suit a variety of roles would be:

3x Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage
9x Greater Mark of Attack Damage
    9x Greater Seal of Armor
9x Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist

This rune page suits Ability Power carries, Attack Damage carries, junglers and solo-top laners. Attack damage is universally good for dealing auto-attack damage which will suffice most roles, even APCs. When you get a feel for your champions, you will be able to decide which runes to buy to suppliment specific play-styles.

For instance, if you want to gear that page more for mid lane AP carry, you would:

3x Greater Quintessence of Ability Power
9x Greater Mark of Magic Penetration
    9x Greater Seal of Armor
9x Greater Glyph of Magic Resist

    Hope this helps :)

I honestly disagree with you Embracing. For mid lane? For sure Flat mr((Unless you know they're picking a non-ap mid)), otherwise i like scaling Mr. By the time you encounter magic, they're either almost as effective or perhaps even better.

As most new players actually don't buy resistances end-game/at all, I figured it'd be best to mention scaling MR :3

It's better with just flat MR runes. Optimal for both ADCs APCs and even possibly top laners and junglers.
Convinient as well (only need to buy 9 flat mr rather than 9 flat mr and 9 scaling)

    Rest are 100% correct :3
