Yes, you are suppose to initiate with Malphite's ultimate and then tank some damage from the enemy team, to support your carries.

"Well if you want more damage you can go with Abyssal Scepter, ROA or Rylai's Scepter, for more damage on your ultimate. I prefer to play him as tank, but he can be played as AP/tank, but I'm not really good at that. xD
