"From my experience, it's generally dependant on the champ and stage in the game.
1). Jayce - I think most people continue to build on his other abilities
2). Sion - AP Sion pushes the ult off as far as possible
3). Brand - His ult is pretty meh while in laning phase. You get it if you see "
