The reason why you get Tear after Athene's and Ardent is the following: Tear is purely a mana regen item, which is nice, but is not the essential stat for Soraka. Also you'll be working on Oasis"

I know that Sona was known back in the day for her Lich Bane build and burst of damage, but when I look at champions and items I try to pick the best and what will impact the game the most to have an easier tim"
