Explaining Reputation

Does reputation really affect you as a user noticeably? Do votes on your comments and guides predict your reputation? Does it affect how hard it is to find your guides or how seriously people take your answers to questions posted? I'm just wondering if it's something I should be worried about or if I should keep it in a healthy state.
