That being said, unless you have someone else on your team who would benefit from the AS (like Irelia, Twitch, Jax... anyone who is AA-reliant) then you can afford to skip or at the very least delay Ardent when Jhin is your ADC.
spooky rights
amazing
What you're recommending as a build (both ardent, redempt, miakel solari AND the AP one if I sadly go spellthief's) are in the guide as recommended build paths.
For runes, my build cheat sheet doesn't recommend the healing or shielding green runes, those are just options in the guide itself. My build recommends Cosmic Insight and cookies.
I understand what you mean by saying Coin is wiser. In many circumstances - when you're in soloQ with an unfamiliar ADC, against all-inners, etc - you will want to take Coin.
However, in an ideal world Spellthief's is your go-to. You WANT to play poke Janna, be aggressive, get AP and make a big impact early game if you can. That should be, imo, your default and that's why it's in my cheatsheet as the #1 option.
If you're in a position where you can't play aggressively - like I said a bad matchup for example - then you go with the next best thing and take Coin, protect your ADC and go for a more conventional utility-based build.
And yeah you're right, Janna is a notorious Leona counter. I mention that in the abilities chapter under Zenith Blade :)
If your positioning is bad, you will have issues with Janna and indeed any squishy support/champion. However, rather than avoid this, Janna might be a good champion with which to learn how to position better, since she's got great peel and is overall a very safe champion.
In laning phase, you don't want to be too close to the enemy, especially if it's a kill lane like Leona, Blitz, Thresh. But you can't sit too far from your ADC because you need to be close enough to be able to peel for him if he gets engaged on. Always be within your E range of course so you are always ready to negate damage or boost his trades. Usually in lane you'll be in brush a lot, so I suggest standing in parallel more or less with your ADC, at E range, in the bush.
In teamfights, you will probably want to be around the backline, usually right next to your ADC so you can peel for him easily, but still in E range of your other allies.
Where your safe zone is will depend on the enemy champion(s). If you're against someone like Zed, you'd need to be quite far away to be safe since he can cast a shadow and close in on you if you're within shadow range. If you're against a Lee, stay further from his Q range etc.
If you do get caught out of place, Janna's pretty slippery considering her high movement speed, all her CC and flash so you might not die anyway.
---
Janna's considered an enchanter or utility support. Your role is similar to Soraka's or Nami's. You don't really do damage on your own, but you boost your allies' survivability and damage. In other words, you can stop your allies from doing dumb stuff by saving them with your CC/shielding/ult. She's good in low elo, as are Nami and Lulu too.
---
Janna's strong against Leona, Alistar, and other melee engagers because she has really strong disengage. She's weak against high-burst supports who won't give her enough time to disengage properly or ones that abuse her immobility - Brand, Zyra, Blitzcrank.
