can i pick him for top role?

Yes you can, although his playstyle (in preseason 11) isn't as similar in any ways as his old Kleptomancy build - you play and build him like a mid Viktor would, maxing E and buying AP items.

You can take Teleport or Ignite summs depending on how aggressive you want to be.
In top lane there's a lot of bruisers/divers, so you have to play safer early since it's easy to die to such like Irelia/Darius/Shen before any big item buys - but after two items you can easily beat them with your range and good zoning tool. Lich Bane would work well as 2nd item since your range advantage makes it easier to proc them more often.

It's not the best option for a top laner since it fits awkwardly in a team comp but it's still possible to carry with it.

can i pick him for a support role
2
BlueMoon01 (12) | November 28, 2020 10:37pm
Wouldn't recommend so, he's item-reliant - which in a way makes him very level/gold dependant

You can't upgrade his skills as well since you're not taking CS most of the time, without upgrades he's performing only 60-70% of what he's capable of

Alternatively, you can slot him in ADC position and have an aggressive support such as Blitzcrank and Leona

Oh god, the urge to take him as an ADC now in preseason 9 is so big. Literally every preseason Riot somehow makes the role of a marksman completely useless, so the only things I can actually play in the bot lane are freaking Karthus and Heimerdinger. And also I saw Sneaky play him at Worlds so I want to try it ;). He's getting somewhat nerfed (imo he's just going to require a better aim) in 8.24 though, but I think he will still be good.

I think the viability of bot lane Viktor will die down if he gets nerfed more on his Q-max playstyle, and with a Viktor replacing Marksman, your team would lose a marksman that's capable of destroying objectives fairly quickly
I think he's viable for bot lane but I think you should only take this if your team is AD-saturated comp

Yea, probably. I think I'll just abuse him in preseason.

Thanks For the great Guide, if I may ask is there a way to play Viktor in the top lane and if so what runes would you take and what would be a bad/good match ups,and would he be viable or fun to play ?

You're welcome, I'm happy that the guide helped you in any way possible! :)

I do play Viktor top lane from time to time if I'm filled top but I played it like how I do mid lane, which by itself isn't anything special really because I don't fill the gap that top laners should (Split pushing, Teleport ganks, etc.) but it's still possible

1. What runes to take?
-Refer to the build, usually top lane consists of melee champions; and I take Electrocute most of the time in the lane, learning how to zone enemy early is important and you can achieve this by trading early to assert your dominance.
- If I am against ranged top like Quinn or Lissandra, Aery can be good as well in scenarios where you don't think you can get your Q AA off easily
- It's more of personal preference, Grasp is possible as well against dangerous laners like Irelia or Talon

2. Bad Matchups ?
- Melee champions that can dive to you easily and scales faster than you (e.g. Irelia & Talon as mentioned)
- Ranged champions that makes you hard to trade with them while also win you in quick trades (e.g. Jayce is the best example here)
- Tanks because its hard to zone them from farming while being so difficult to kill in lane (e.g. Urgot & Ornn

3. Favourable Matchups ?
- Yasuo : Play around minion advantage, his E & AA attracts minion aggro easily and your charged Q passes through his windwall. Be careful of his tornados and you should be fine
- Not much comes to mind but most matchups are fairly equal unless as mentioned in (2)

4. Viable ?
- Yes, play what you like! If you feel uncomfortable playing Viktor at mid, feel free to try him at top lane :)

5. Fun to Play ?
- There's no difference in playstyle between top lane and mid lane but you do get more involved in trades in top lane
- Depends on build, some goes for tank mana build but some goes same build as of going mid

6. Max E or Q ?
- Q max is awful, and I don't recommend it if you're trying hard
- E max is always better even in melee matchups

I didn't expect such a detailed and insightful reply in that short of a time window, thanks again!

Can you update it often?

BlueMoon01 (12) | July 30, 2018 12:49am
I'd have to say I update this guide after every patch; at maximum of 3 days if I'm not busy IRL -- there's a detailed changelogs chronologically arranged in order
Thanks for reading however ! :)

Hey, that guide is just great. It helped me so much to play Viktor. I just wanted to ask you wich Champ you usually ban.

BlueMoon01 (12) | February 23, 2018 2:46am
Thanks for commenting, usually my top priority is Zoe, for obvious reasons - but I'm sure she wouldn't be that great after the nerfs so its not a necessary after the patch

  • Xerath - I can't dodge his Q most of the time, only his Q; but regardless, he's a high difficulty lane matchup for Viktor. Usually if you can dodge his Q it would be easier, if not, you can't win the lane at all
  • Zed - Self explanatory, he's easy to control in lane but you can't outplay much after he gets Duskblade and his damage would be really high by then. Either you play aggressively and smart or you play very safe and open up opportunities to snowball by roaming to other sides of lanes
  • Katarina - Very self-explanatory as well, she can punish you in lane very fast if you mis-stepped once, and its super difficult to stick with her without risking to die. However, she can be stopped easily if she fails to snowball or get killed once or twice

Usually I ban those - for Aurelion Sol, Jayce, Vel'Koz they're pretty rare matchup and its not worth banning them rather than banning risky matchup. For others, try checking the matchup section and check for the hard difficulty ratings

Hey! Just leaving a like since I've used this guide about a million times and honestly it was overdue. Great job and great insight on Viktor. Love him. Cherish him. Protect him, from Riot mainly.

Thank you for the upvote! I'm glad someone is able to make use of this guide as a stepping stone for getting better at Viktor :)

I'll continue to update the guide so it gets as updated as possible to the meta :D
