I have been playing this game for a little while now and im not a pro player. I keep learning stuff en getting better but this game is HUGE and there are so many things to learn.. So I thought... Lets look for some help on the internet and that was the moment that I found MOBAfire. I read a guide for the build of Ashe and my first game (by following that guide) was an S- and (silly) is my best game ever so far. I was super happy and I dived right in to find more threads like that one. Thats when I found this freaking AMAZING quide. It's not just a guide for beginners, it's THE guide to read. I read it 2 times now and im not done just jet. My playstyle has changed en everthing that you have explained here has been and still is really helpfull.

Big fat thumbs up for building this one. It sure is one hell of a great quide and Im learning so much from this.
My English aint that good but I think you understand how happy I am with finding this one (^.^)
Thanks a lot and keep it up ! ;)

Wow, this is so encouraging and cool to read! I've been playing the game for awhile and I sometimes forget how thrilling it was to learn all this new stuff and put it into action. I'm so happy you're having fun and I'm so glad to be a part of that fun!

P.S. Your English is better than you think!

Wow. I was going to make a guide similar to this but I stumbled across this. It's soo in-depth and I can't imagine making this myself. It seems super helpful to new players and even for players that have been playing for quite a while, including myself. How long did this guide take for you? It's very long and all the work you have put in to it is insane! :O

Thanks! Going from idea to publication took 1-2 months, if I recall correctly. Many hours of incremental improvements have been made over the past 6 years as well.

It's hard to imagine completing a difficult project. Take it one step at a time and don't get discouraged by trying to accomplish everything at once.

Massive respect for producing this. The new player experience of LoL itself, using just the content published by Riot, is poor, and leaves it up to the player to get better by trial and error. This is made worse for me because I am in my 50s with job, kids, mortgage, etc, with limited time to experiment and research. This guide does what Riot should have done - and you are doing it as a labour of love. I salute you.

I'm happy to help! Thanks for the kind words!

It's really cool to know of someone your age getting into League! How'd you get into it? Have you been a gamer for a long time?

Excellent Guide. Despite playing league for over a year, I seem to forget some of the basics, this guide has reminded me of some small yet important things 10/10.

Quoted:
All basic attacks deal physical damage

Slightly misleading. Corki's basic attacks do more magical damage than they do physical damage. Colossal Smash also makes Galio's basic attack do 100% magic damage. There's more examples out there.

Quoted:
Ranged champions fire a homing auto attack projectile

Also slightly misleading. Vel'Koz' auto attacks do not fire a projectile (they cannot be blocked by Wind Wall), and Graves' auto attacks are not homing (they can be dodged).

Quoted:
Range does not increase with level.

Tristana's range does, although I suppose it doesn't need to be mentioned as it is part of her passive.

Quoted:
Cooldown Reduction (CDR): Reduces ability cooldowns by a percentage. Caps at 40%.

Cosmic Insight allows you to cap CDR at 45%

Quoted:
Shields are shown in health bars as grey

I'd say shields are more white/silver than grey. It's important to distinguish as grey bars in health bars mean a completely different thing.

I understand League is a complex game with a lot of information and new mechanics constantly being released, and your guide was made around the time where some of those new contradictory mechanics didn't exist back then, however, if you think its better not to introduce newer players to such mechanics to avoid confusing or overwhelming them, that's okay with me as its your guide and its up to you to do what you decide is best for viewers. I haven't fully read the guide but if you were down to including the more complex and contradictory mechanics in the game I'd be more than happy to help pinpoint them out, other than that, great guide :)

Hey, thanks for reading and critiquing my guide so thoroughly! I do think it's overwhelming to introduce newbies to all these exceptions, but I do try to compromise by mentioning such details in spoiler boxes. Also, when rules are broken as part of an item or passive, I don't include it my text, rather, I point the player to the in-game tooltips.

I'll make sure to mention Corki, Graves, and Vel'Koz in the spoiler where I mention other auto attackers like Jhin. I agree with you about shield color, and will edit accordingly.

Thanks again!

Hey there, I really appreciate your initiative in giving newbies somewhere to look for info and learn how everything works in League of Legends, this guide really seems like something that was supposed to be at LoL's website.

One note, though, you should state that armor doesn't scale linearly, but esponentially. The more armor you have, the less the damage mitigation will grow, otherwise new player might misunderstand how armor's damage reduction works.

Good job, thumbs up for you!

Thank you! My goal was to provide the resources Riot should provide, but has not. Glad to know I succeeded.

It is a common misconception that armor has diminishing returns, that arises from mistaking the incoming damage formula, which is a hyperbolic function, for an exponential function. The graph for the effective health formula is clearly linear.

Check out the LoL Wiki's super in-depth entry on armor.

Really nice work, this can be very useful for new players or players who are stuck in lower elo to really get a better understanding of the game.

One small thing I found: in the part about warding & vision control you have a spoiler.
In the last paragraph you talk about Tracker's Knife and Sightstone. But sadly these don't exist anymore at the moment. Thanks Riot, good job *cough cough*! ^^

Otherwise a really awesome guide, keep up the good work!

I've upvoted this in the past, but took the time to read this all the way through this morning. I really enjoyed reading this compendium of essential League information. I truly believe this will help newer players and even those with hundreds of games under their belt. I liked that you took the time every now and then to throw in a joke (lol Udyr), but otherwise your tone was no-nonsense, bare facts, which helps with not only the readability, but gives you authority as the author. An excellent guide and one that should be featured on the front page or somewhere as a go-to resource. Keep it up!

Hey jhoijhoi! Thank you so much! It means a lot to me that you took such a thoughtful look at my guide. Much of its excellence can be credited to you. "Making a Guide" was one of my primary resources. I'm glad you enjoyed those little jokes :)

The guide is linked somewhere in the forums here, but I would love to see it get more visibility! Any recommendations on how to do that?

Well, it took nearly a year, but congratulations on your guide being featured on the front page "permanently"! In such a great spot and with so much visual space, I hope more and more visitors are drawn to your up-to-date and well-written wiki.

Wishing you the best for the future :)

Also, Cass R no longer works that way, as of a few patches ago.

Thank you! I think mechanics like that are just too advanced (and rarely encountered by beginners)to be included. There's already so much info! Besides, I like to leave a few surprises!

I'm afraid the quality of this guide is low. Its readability is limited and it is not suitable for new players like myself. If you're interested I can give you some constructive feedback

Sure, hit me with that constructive feedback!

When you write a guide it helps a lot to put yourself in the shoes of the reader and think "Does he already know the meaning of this word or concept I'm using?" If the answer is "no" or "maybe not", you need to explain the meaning of that concept first. Your audience are new players, i. e., people who have played the game very little or nothing at all. That means that you need to explain the meaning of every gaming concept you use before you use it. Talking about runes in page 2 and explaining what they are in page 20, for instance, doesn't work.

I'll give you some examples of the most obvious problems (there are many more):

Incorrect
This guide thoroughly explains the fundamentals of LoL: It doesn't even talk about the store for instance.
"There are uniquely designed champions that bend or break the above rules": Most of what this section says doesn't bend or break those rules.

Missing
You don't explain what the store is, how to use it, etc. You talk about unlocking game content, but say nothing about how to do it.

Concepts used before explaining them
Runes, champions.

Concepts used without explaining them
Owning a champion: What does that mean? How does one own a champion? It's not like a pair of shoes...
Refund credits, skins, rank, ability points.

Other
The sentence intended to define "passive" doesn't actually tell you what a passive is.

This is just from the first couple of pages. I hope it gives you an idea of what I mean.

Awesome guide. A lot of basics, but more nuanced stuff as well. I'm coming over from HOTS, and a lot of this is assumed. This guide helped <3
