+ Left 4 Dead, Day of Defeat, Counterstrike. I'm a total Valve fanboy. They're known for taking small devs, independent projects, bringing them into the Valve offices and seeing what they can do. That's how Portal came to be, and I'm pretty sure TF, CS and DoD have similar stories. Now it's DotA's turn :) Every single game Valve has produced has been an FPS though, except for Alien Swarm and Ricochet. Alien Swarm is probably a good indicator to what other top-down games (DotA) might look and play like on the Source engine. Though probably with less aliens and flamethrowers :)

those are links for the valve stuff
also thats not riot vs valve shrillex, riot is trying to keep valve from trademarking it, and if they have it trademarked, they could say that no one but them can make dota games. while league of legends is different, i still think HoN is a dota clone so that might have some repercussions. the main problem, as riot stated, is that dota has been a game made by the community, no big company ran it, and that could cause problems.
on a related note **** valve for making denying still in the game.
