Dont forgot health , for example thornmail vs sunfire
if they are all only ad dmg both are similar
if you face irelia or corki or cho gath , sunfire is better because only health protect you from true dmg .
if you face say MF with IE & madred , thornmail will be much better since the health on sunfire is not as good as armor to protect from his attackes (and as good as mr but here we talk about health&armor :o)
say you have 2000 health , 0 armor and 0 mr after all the debuffs penetration etc
if she hit for 200 and got madred , with thornmail she will deal 100 dmg + 80 magical dmg she will need 11 hit to kill you
with sunfire she will hit for ~155 + 98 magical she will need 10 hit .

Considering only physical dmg is pointless since you will never face a physical dmg only team so what i added was necessary to show you how wrong you are .
