I watched 2 livestreams a while ago, both with gragas. Both were the ESL tournament.
First game: TSM runs full tanky team, Reginald takes Gragas. Regi stomps Malzahar top, and is unkillable once he buys his Catalyst. He pulls off strong ganks with his ultimate, and he goes 10/0, with a total team kills of 18.
Next game was some team I forget vs. HKEGG. HKEGG ran gragas. It seemed like the other team was going to win at first, but at a confrontation at baron, gragas' poke brought the enemy down to low enough health that HKEGG, at an early game disadvantage, could safely initiate. Once the enemy team got into formation, Gragas blew them apart and they couldn't take baron. The enemy team lost the game because of the gragas. The person livestreaming said, "This is why we should run Gragas. He completely controls the dynamic of the game."
So, in effect, kind of a one-trick pony, but it's a damn good trick.
He can hold a solo lane, but unless he gets a decent gank or wants to put his life on the line, he can't get much decent harass in. His barrels move too slowly to be able to hit anyone at max range, but if you get close it's not hard to hit with his barrel roll. Late game, he becomes something of a make-or-break cho'gath, though he has the most pushing power of any AP off-tank.

He's reasonably difficult to play competitively... and people dont like how he looks.... However I hear that the new gragas skin makes people actually want to play him :D!

When people low ELO (basic community of LoL) see ONE SkILL that is unreliable (or 2 depending on your opinion) they say wow, he's uselss late game (that would be his barrel)
His barrel can deal quite a bit of damage, but it's a disappointment that you need to get close to accurately land it. Gragas would be SIGNIFICANTLY better if his barrel traveled faster and you could reactivate it faster. Even without boots it's easy as hell to dodge, which makes laning against ranged champions a defensive lane and makes it a pain in team fights because you have to be right up next to them.
I just looked at Gragas's numbers and I'm thinking this guy is so fat and strong, why is he not played more often!??!?
I understand that though his Q has a really long range, it is slow and rather easy to dodge. So why have players not changed the philosophy of this skill from powerful nuke skillshot -> into powerful timed/remote mine? Use it as a position control device rather than a straight damage skill.

I just want to keep smiling FOREVER
