I don't have AP in my build because I am not going for kills but assists. I do fine getting kills when really needed with no AP. I am sorry that you feel he needs AP. Have you tried the build as it is?

I'm just going to say that it is a huge mistake not to have AP in your Maokai build. That is the first thing you should seriously reconsider if you want to be successful with him.
