HG is good, my point is/was simply: People have to know a lot about the mechanics to use it correctly. I'd say it distinguishes good players from top players.
HG is almost always worth it at some point in the game, and as you wrote: If the enemies are building so much MRES against you that it's not worthwhile anymore, they will be shredded by the physicals.
If you play a champ like Leblanc, you want to get HG as soon as you finished your shoes + first AP item - if you get it early enough, you will snowball hard even without Mejas.
