Back to the topic, support is definitely more about the playstyle in my opinion, regardless of the champion.
I find that when playing support, leaving selfish thoughts behind is the way to play.

With support champions, I also feel that you just need a bit of build optimization to go along with your playstyle for the best results.
For instance, I could build Alistar as an AP burst champion, but that leaves him very defenseless when his ult is down or it wears off.
With a support, items should either be to benefit your team, or to help you stay alive longer, to continue helping your team.

I'm working on a guide and I was curious how people would react to the general idea of it. Nice to know people are relatively open-minded to the idea

I think to an extent it can come down to build style too. I know plenty of Lux who build pure damage and may think they're support but aren't really.

Building a pure AP Lux and constantly shielding everyone is supporting. Building a pure AP Lux and nuking is not. There are quite a few people who consider not building the "core" support items not supporting... You don't have to build support to be support, but you do need to be willing to play in a supportive manner.

It's BOTH build and playstyle.
Mostly because the platstyle restricts how you can build.

But choosing to build a more optimal build is supportive in a different way, since then you can do your job more effectively. A middle ground is actually the best choice since then you get a good balance of support and ability effectiveness.

Support is a very vague role, as it can mean nearly anything. Tanking, attacking, healing, farming, etc. are all forms of support, but the support role is commonly seen as that which enables the team to last longer in fights. It is assumed that the support role should be played defensively and that they should never die. That is not entirely true of course.

Whoever plays "Support" is going to have to be able to have quick thinking, good reactions, and good leadership skills in order to be as efficient as possible. They should have experience beyond most on their team so they can make the calls for the team, tell the team what to build, basically boss the team to ensure victory. Support in my opinion means doing everything and anything you can in your power to make your team win.

Therefore, viewing support as a play style or a certain "build" is very ineffective, when in reality, support is doing whatever you can to win. And because there are so many combinations of builds + masteries + summoner spells there will be no set way to play support. I think I've said enough, just remember to never limit yourself and you'll be alright =).
