It's works well if you end up getting merc's treads too.
Great way to get the 20 MRpen and still get some utility.

A better alternative to Ionian Boots of Lucidity imo is to get the 9% from sorcery and intelligence, the 6% from Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction(that's 15% before you buy anything), the 15-20% from Deathfire Grasp or Morello's Evil Tome(both of which give additional mana regen), and the last 10% from Crest of the Ancient Golem or Elixir of Brilliance. That's 40% right there, no need for the boots.
My opinion of Haunting Guise is that it's too expensive and not rewarding enough on caster's that rely on ability power for damage compared to getting your next ability power item.

They should rework Haunting Guise AND make it able to build into something else.
"Blizzard spoke thus; Thou shalt not BM. And the players replied Nay, I shall Play my hand with Lethal already on the board. And so Blizzard sent unto them this Brawl of Yogg, As a lesson for their sins of Pride and Greed, for he is the Prophet of Madness and RNG. On that day, the tavern descended into an era of chaos and darkness, until the weekend passed and everyone forgot all about it. Amen. Book of SMOrc, Verse 20, Chapter 4." - Feam T
Another thread mentioned that brutalizer might build into LW. It'd be an interesting idea for HG to build into Void Staff.
There's far too many items that only build into one item.
I'm thinking something needs to be done.

For casters that have to nuke faster, what about getting Haunting guise to cover your Mag Pen needs and Boots of lucidity? If gives the strength of Sorcerer's Shoes while giving CDR and HP making you all around stronger. You can sell Haunting Guise later for a better source like, Void staff but, is it a viable early game trade-off?
