Seems like a pretty solid build. Did a good bit of damage with abilities and melees when I used it, but it just seems like it needs a little survivability, like a Rylai's or something similar.

no, having Null sphere first gives you the power to last hit minions more effectively since most mids are ranged. plus it gives you the ability to harass if you need to. It's not really a melee build, it focuses on AP, but adds Attack speed to it since he is a melee champ so that his Nether Blade can do a bunch more damage mid to late game. if that makes sense.
