it's not a bad idea. The Health and the regen is great for sustain. But, I think it falls of, you might get a lane where being agressive would pay off more. But you won't be doing any serious damage. And some champs need that MP5 from the ring.
Kennen has no mana...So he wouldn't start with Doran's Ring anyways. XD
I prefer to start with a Doran's Shield because I almost always get stuck against AD carries when I play Kennen.

You'll want to compound your effectiveness if you can win it.
For example. Talon is decent as Talon. Yet, when talon gets Brutalizer, he wins most lanes for free.
That's cause armor pen increases his potential so drastically.
Yet on a guy like Mundo who's already highly focused on Regen, it can be great.
When I play Pantheon? I buy Doran's shield and solo top every time :P Between my runes and masteries, I am able to stay in lane even against sustain lanes. When I get my wriggle's it's over, I'm there for keeps.
