Been playing Lee Sin for the past week. Here are my conclusions.
Never considered Wit's end. Always went for Merc treads and that was enough MR for the time. If it was a slow game and I tried to get a wit's end, I wouldn't really have the damage to back up the attack speed.
I considered IE once. I went for BT. It's simply better.

I have been playing Lee sin for several months, not just a week.
Wit's End is an awful item for him, no synergy whatsoever with his kit.
In regards to I.E.
Simply better is simply not correct.
It's a different function entirely. Both are viable items.
BT buffs your skill damage substantially and is cheaper than I.E. Valid points and considerable merit for BT.
I.E. turns Lee into an auto attacking machine.
It's not as if I haven't done this on multiple occasions you know. It works very well.

There's quite simply no higher damage output combo on Lee Sin (That can be realistically used with his kit) than Triforce / Atma's / I.E. with your defense being Warmogg's/Force and the armor from Atma's.
The passive of Lee's will give you attack speed, and with that much crit and damage, you will decimate your opponents.
But, you have to be able to auto attack, which you won't always be able to do. *Shrug*
It is the -highest- realistic damage output for Lee Sin however.
If you wanted to build tankier, there are other options.
Also, Trinity Force's damage isn't as high Lee as I.E even when 150% damage procs are factored- you're buying it for utility like slows and run speed as opposed to damage. the crit and Attack speed are nice in conjunction with Atma's as well.
If you add in an I.E, the damage just suddenly goes through the roof, and you're critting squishy champs for 5-600 damage after armor is factored, even all the way up to 700 damage with trinity procs, and your attack speed is through the roof.
However, if you need to be tankier, Trinity Force is just as viable an option for your damage output as I.E. might be, albeit less damage, and will offer you much more utility.
It shouldn't be an argument of why not to use X items, you're limiting yourself.
It should be -when- to use x items.
I just don't see any situation in which buying Wit's end is a good idea on Lee. I'd rather buy a zeal and a Negatron cloak and be building towards items I can actually use, which have actual synergy with my kit.

It's not a question of "if you need to be tankier", you simply DO need to be tankier.
Thus limiting the choice. Gunblade and BT both give survivability, unlike IE.

Realistically, BT and Hex don't give enough survivability that you can make that argument when you have already have Atma's, Warmogg's, and Force of Nature for survivability.
You really -don't- need to be tankier at all. Again, I'm not asking you if you think I'm right. I'm telling you this based on substantial personal experience with the champion.
Lee Sin has a kit that can be played as a bursty damage dealer if you build for it. He can be played as an auto attacker. He can be played as a physical caster. He can be played an an Offtank. He can be played as a tanky DPS.
Limiting yourself in your options is not doing yourself any good. You should try it before you knock it. It's a finisher item, after you already have Atmog's and Force of nature.

Even Wit's End is a better choice :P
(not an item I'd prefer on Lee, but it's still better than IE)
Delusional.
