Okay but think about this in turn.

You build your Philo stone and your HoG. You harass the enemy lane. Yorick harass is very good, so you should be able to do this fairly well with the help of a carry.

You build your Tear of the Goddess, but don't finish Manamune yet.

You build an Aegis. Then you finish Manamune.

Now you've got a support who can spam a slow, who's got some defensive stats and a buff to the group, slowing enemies. And you still have Yorick ult, which is in my opinion the only reason you pick Yorick.

And you can have a truly excellent solo top like Cho Gath or Singed, while still getting the best aspect of Yorick, his ultimate.

Let's be honest with ourselves. If we're playing competitively, we're not gonna pick Yorick just because he has annoying harass in lane phase, and gets tanky mid game. His damage is somewhat sub par because he doesn't scale excellently offensively, so you end up being a meat-shield-ghoul-bot.

Not to say it doesn't work putting him top, he's just better suited to the role of support because you still get his slow and his excellent ultimate without taking the solo lane which has other champions who are both better than Yorick and better for the lane than Yorick.

---

Also notice the 300% AP ratio to health effect on Zilean's ultimate, and notice that Yorick's ultimate does not follow suit.

Yorick is better suited to the support role than Zilean, although Zilean does support his team even if you take a solo lane. (Yorick does too.)

However because Yorick -can- support, he -should- support is what I'm saying. You're not losing much, keeping the best aspects of his kit.

By your logic, Janna should always solo mid because she's better there. This is true, Janna with a solo lane is stronger than support Janna in a duo lane, you're right.

But, the reason a support champion can be considered a strong candidate to support, is because of their ability to function without any gold.

The next determining factors are what they bring to a duo lane, whether it's support, harass, disable, etc.

Yorick fills a lot of these needs. He can sustain himself, harass the enemy, disable the enemy, and he needs no gold to use his slows or his ultimate. He's still Yorick even with no gold, much like Janna is still Janna. If you run him bot, the carry can simply buy 2-3 Doran's blades and either Wriggle's or a BF sword for sustain, and your lane is immediately super super strong.

Yet Cho gath, Singed, Jax with no gold, are not the same. They are weak and don't contribute much, being champions who scale incredibly well with gear. They need the solo lane. (Although the new nerfed Jax seems to suck in a solo and be completely unable to win his lane so I wouldn't take him personally.)

This is essentially why he should support instead of solo. Yes he can solo lane, he's just tailor made to a bot lane set up, offers you everything you need from him as a champion, and allows you to have a better pick in the solo lane.

idk, I feel like Yorick NEEDS at the very least Manamune, and you won't a) get enough farm to buy it and b) won't be able to charge it up fast enough.

Tear is 1k gold, and that's all you need to spam your skills. The damage is not needed, you're a support.

Does anyone complain that Soraka/Janna/Sona don't deal enough damage? Nope. Of course not.

What do you think about building him tanky CDR Duff? I play around a great deal with CDR in his build and it makes support tank Yorick a very viable option. I still enjoy solo top over bottom though. You do well alone and can usually hold a 2v1 lane situation. I agree about putting Yorick bottom in competitive situations. All you need is tear and you can stick around forever.

That was my original thought.

I tried everything from Glacial Shroud to Spirit Visage to Brutalizer and onward.

After giving him a few goes I decided he was mediocre at everything but has a good slow and a good ult and can heal himself.

I think he'll gain popularity if people play him a duo. Otherwise, I don't think he'll ever be a top pick in any lane.
