Coming from someone with a lot of experience in 3s, it is unbalanced to an extent, that extent being offtanks basically outclass most other champions; however, if you know who to pick then the map itself is pretty balanced.
A generally good team comp is 1 carry top (AP or AD, but MUST HAVE HIGH MOBILITY AND SURVIVABILITY! Ezreal is a great example, so is Kennen)

Right but historically there's been ten or so champions that absolutely dominate the map.
It's not the map, it's the nature of having only three champions in a game who's balance revolves around scenarios where bruisers and the like need to be strong enough to have an impact against five opponents.

I know. Worst part is, I lose to people that I really shouldn't because our jungler refuses to gank...
Garen/Malphite VS Maokai? Udyr gives first blood when he ganks.
Cass/Renek VS Maokai? I give first blood when Cass seriously dives me. She dies to the turret because I miss my Q to deal damage before she dies.
Amazingly, we won both of those games though so... yea.
EDIT: Winter, what kind of Maths? I might be able to help. I'm quite good at it. Depends on the level though.

To dive Maokai is to have a deathwish.
Basically if you 2v1 top, you have to deny almost all the CSfrom the champ defending or else it's not worth it. The lack of map control and nobody farming the jungle hits you pretty hard.
So as long as you were able to farm some then it does make sense to me that you came back for the win. :)
