Boxes still deal damage and it's mostly about the fear. If you trap the whole brush, the enemy just cannot go there, which will zone you enemies from the brush. And if you stack up 6 boxes, even the reduced damage will kill a normal champ.

And if you read my build instead of instant down voting, you would know that maxing shiv (E) is one the alternatives i present in it. Use E for damage, use level 1 boxes for the fear only. It is a way to play it and if you read the thing instead of just being super smart you would know that i listed this possibility.

In late game, the box trap works together with Deathfire Grasp, Ignite and shiv. The boxes still deal nice damage, you just need to punch the champion with something else as well to kill them. But i really wouldn't go so far to say ap shaco is useless just because they nerfed his box ap ratio from 0.25 to 0.20 and base damage by 5 per level. Weaker, yes, but not useless. Late-game, he mostly uses shiv and DFG, which remain the same.

AP Shaco is useless. The boxes have a reduced amount of bonus magic damage, therefore AP it totally **** unless using your E key alot.

I really love playing Shaco at bottom lane together with an ad carry, but I often picked only one gold/10. The build is very, but you shall add the Season 2 mastery and Boots of Mobility instead of Sorcerer's Shoes. Finally playing Shaco as support is just great and Caitlyn especially one of his best mates. :) +1
