The thing is I always have specific things I want to achieve whenever I see an image. If I see a sort of frosty image like Janna's Snow Queen skin, I want to add snow effects, icy winds and all that stuff (though in this case the original image actually has some effects already, probably a bad example :P). If I see a dragon, I want blazing fire coming from his mouth while smoke erupts from his nose, I want burning buildings on the background etc.
And then I realise I can't get stuff like that done :P

His legs are not supposed to be like that, I just screwed up and had to erase more of the original image to make it look slightly better. Those legs are really a terror though D:

I do that all the time...People think the render/starting splash work doesn't make a difference in the end result. To an extent it doesn't, but if you boil it down to "the better the image to start with, the better the finish" it makes sense.
There is of course skill and effort, but people feel more inclined to work with an image THEY themselves find appealing.
