Vlad is a fast-paced mage, his CDs are low and his damage is good. After maxing Q, he can stay in lane forever. His ult makes total difference in a teamfight because it boosts his damage and the "explosion" is awesome lvl 2-3
Malzahar is a tough mage with excelent AP ratios. He has a skill to get mana, silence and his ult has an OP damage. He's not a god though

Actually Vlad just got some buffs, he seems like he's pretty damn good now. He's free this week so try him out.

You still have to land the full combo. His damage is terrible if you miss any of the three skills.
Most of the ult's damage comes from you standing on his Null Zone anyway. Or w/e the thing is called. He pushes unbearbly fast though and it leaves him open to ganks a lot.

No. His silence is hard to hit, his mana replenisher needs to kill a decent amount of minions to give you more mana than when you cast the skill and the ult "stuns" him (if you move,, its cancelled, and you are fking vulnerable)

Vlad is fun. Malz is still strong.
I bought Malz a couple weeks ago and he's been my fotm, just completely dominating everything with him. Haven't lost a lane yet with him, and generally get fb.
Just some thing to clarify.. his silence isn't that hard to land, unless you're new to the game, bad with skillshots, or w/e. His silence isn't a skillshot but I relate it to one because it has a delay and is imo kind of like a unique skillshot when trying to land it. But once you get the hang of it it's quite easy, and it's aoe so can silence an entire team if they're stupid, hiding in a bush, ect.
Also, most of his ulti's dmg does NOT come from standing on null zone... His ulti is ****ing powerful, especially early. But yes, using it leaves you locked up and any cc like stun will interrupt it. Just have to be careful when you use it, it's great for 1v1 or to lock up an over-extended champ in a teamfight, ect.
He farms like a boss though, so easy to get cs and I often have most in the match when I play him. He can push lanes quick if he needs to leave or wants to gank. He is more susceptible to ganks like some one said, but just don't be an idiot and hang around the middle of lane when it's pushed.
When I play Malz I try to conserve mana early when my skills dont do a lot of dmg and AA to cs, maxing malefic visions first and using it to help my farm a bit. Sometimes I'll throw it on the opposing champ to harass and it does a considerably nice amount of dmg. Sometimes people are stupid though and stay next to their minion wave and it kills their minions then transfers to them.. so if you see them doing that just use it on minions and let it keep transferring to them. Only baddies will fall for that though..
Once 6 fb is pretty easy to get, I'll hopefully have them harassed down to 3/4 or 1/2 hp, might try to harass a bit more or if I feel like they're low enough I flash next to them, ignite-E-R before they can flash away and they're dead.
Later game though when using my combo I prioritize null zone over malific visions when busting off my combo, but if I think I have time before they could flash or use some sort of escape I'll bust off the full combo. Often times you don't need the full one though, he does great damage. Just depends how much hp they have but I wouldn't waste your combo on a full hp champ unless you know you can take them out.

Malz is one of the easiest farmers in the game.
If your not that good at last hitting go for malz and you'll easily be farmed enough to fight end game. Which is what you should be aiming for.

I need a mage for mid lane and i've narrowed down to 2 like the title implys
But i hear a lot that vlad is nerfed weak, and people usually make it sound that Malz is like the GOD of mages
