I honestly don't recommend AP Warwick at all. The only AP ability he has is Hungering Strike. AP Pantheon is more viable. Only thing anyone should really build Warwick with anymore is Tanky On-hit effects, which Riot promoted even more when they buffed his passive with on-hit damage. If not that, than just Tanky DPS works, but AP Warwick really isn't viable at all.
Thanks to Rys Aberdeen, Jhoijhoi, The_Nameless_Bard, Arcana3, and Miss Maw for the sigs!

If the only AP item you build is that Hextech Gunblade, you're going to end up with only 70 AP. So Hungering Strike is going to do 275 + 70 = 345 damage. But keep in mind that it does the higher of that value or 20% of the enemy's HP, whichever is higher. 345 / .2 = 1725, so you'll only be able to use your AP on anyone with less than 1725 HP. Since virtually everyone builds themselves up to over 2k HP, this makes the AP from the Gunblade rather worthless.
If you also build Rabadon's Deathcap, you'll end up at about 273 AP. So Hungering Strike is going to do 275 + 273 = 548 damage. Except that 548 / .2 = 2740, so you'll still be ignoring your AP against tanks.
Since Hungering Strike is Warwick's only AP-scaling ability, and it scales for free off of enemy HP as well, building Warwick with AP is largely a waste of item slots. It takes an obscene amount of AP to make an impact on his Q for all targets, and every item slot used to get AP makes him squishier. A dead Warwick cannot continue to cast Q or attack, and therefore does a lot less damage.
Of course, building Sorcerer's Shoes on Warwick is viable, since his passive, Q, and most of his damage items are all going to do magic damage. I'm just not sure if it beats the tenacity on merc treads.

Gunblade was pretty good, BEFORE the nerf. It's a pretty bad item on WW now.
