You're not the only one :)
Check my guide out, it's focusing on W first (playing at 1.7k Elo, so including some solid analysis :p)!
Read it and liked it, same conclusions as me.. I really enjoy Varus and the W skill is by far the best early game damage source for him..
Btw, have you encountered a strong counter against Varus yet ?
So far I've only seen 1 champion that is strong against him in lane, Urgot.
Also written down in my guide ;)
Me myself did very well with Vayne. If you're good with Vayne's Q, you can easily outplay Varus, especially if he maxes Q first.
E: oh and Urgot is pretty strong against him as well, y. But that's not something about Varus' mechanic, that's just Urgot being ****ing op. Only way to counter him is by the support pick ^^

Y ME NO LIKE VIKINGS.
DAFUQ.
DAFUQ.
I don't know why people max
Piercing Arrow first, it's a skill shot and, as such, can be dodged.
Blighted Quiver helps with last hitting, and it allows you to do trades better.

If I helped you, click that +rep!

Anyway, I max Q first because it has more nuke damage. It works better against laners with no sustain because if you can get in 2 or 3 good shots, they basically have to recall.
W is better for consistent poke and harass, I think. Also if they build heavy armor.
