Not only for elo, it's for your personal skill increase as well.
By maining a specific champion and playing him/her in higher levels of play, you won't need to focus on what your champ does; it becomes instinct. Instead your eyes are dragged to general gameplay and game mechanics, which then helps you transition from a one-trick pony to a pro player.
At least that's what I think.
I would recommend that you got at least 2-3 picks for your main role that you can master.
For example, I main as support role in ranked and I'm kinda good with

But you can't always be your main role, so you should learn to master or at least be better than average with 1-2 champions for each other role, jungle, mid, top and AD..
My list for ranked picks that I play atm look like this.
Support:

AD:

Mid:

Top:

Jungle:

Solo Queue Riven

Yay, 2.1k.
Tried pretty hard this game and dominated Yorick top hard. Yorick is, despite common belief, no counter to Riven and she jsut ***** on him when well played.
Went roaming after top tower was down min~12 or something and secured us mid and bot tower, some kills and drake. They surrendered 20.

Riven doesn't need it. You counter sustain with burst, not with sustain. Going double dorans and Brutalizer allows me to kill yorick from full hp with my ult. I went for FH afterwards because I decided to play safe and wanted to make sure I don't get raped by Lee and Vayne. It also allowed me to play much more cocky, for example diving Ziggs after two turrets and surviving Lee Sin with 150hp afterwards.

Riven too gud. Had 6 games with her of my last 10. 5 wins and an annoying throw from botlane. Though I mainly jungle her, since it is easier to get jungle than top.
Like Lee she has insane ad-scaling, huge mobility and burst. I ran from a Gragas from one base to the other and got away. And he's got good mobility!
