1. the benefit of the thread.
2. their own benefit.
first, it sends the thread to top, which makes lazy people who dont have time to click 'next page' to see other threads.
second.. c'mon! its +1 on your posts. and everyone likes their post count to increase, but not everyone want them to increase in that way.

Since we're on the subject of "bumping", some people think "bumping" means they can go and necro threads a year or two ago. If you do, I will find you.
