Wacom wacom wacom wacom wacom.

They set the standard when it comes to drawing tablets. For $150, you can get a pretty decent Wacom tablet. Though, they don't make intuos 3 tablets anymore, you should look into buying one used.

They're not that bad and heck, you get the bang + more for your buck. If you're looking for something new, then get wacom bamboo tablet (though, the intuos 3 is the better buy in my opinion). The link is below with more info.

Good luck!

^ That's the one I personally use. 100$ at Best Buy. You can probably get it anywhere you want for possibly cheaper.

Works real well.

EDIT: I'm using the "Capture pen and touch" model that it displays on that site.

I would definitely go cheap if it's your first tablet. Actually buying a used Intuos3 would be good since some people actually prefer them to Intuos4. Otherwise my first tablet was a Bamboo and I used that for quite a while, still works but I upgraded to a large Intuos4 recently. :)

If you are already good at drawing it is worth it, and will take you a while to get used to the medium. I see people buy them because they think it will improve their art somehow, but it actually makes you feel a bit bad at first because there's a learning curve to it.

And since you asked, here's my gallery. :P http://mowendesigns.deviantart.com/

I started out with a wacom bamboo tablet.Small and cheap.Costed me about 30-35 euros.
Then I moved to my "Trust" tablet that is rather large but pretty cost-efficient with a price tag of 70 euros.

Thing is, is that it is pretty hard to get used to a tablet.

Paint Tool Sai is a cheap, easy, and powerful tool. I think only $30. Photoshop is of course good but FAR more expensive. I found GIMP difficult to use and required a lot of tweaking to get it up to snuff.

So I would go with Paint Tool Sai. ;)
Thanks to GrandMasterD for my sig!

I second getting paint tool Sai. It's one of the most powerful /DRAWING/ software available. If you're looking to just find a program purely for drawing, then go with SAI. If you are more into special effects, rendering and all that other fun jazz, look into getting photoshop CS2 (it's cheaper).

Also, Photoshop elements comes with most wacom tablet software, it's a great start for painting software along with a side of special effects. Just make sure you configure the software to accommodate for pressure sensitivity because, unlike SAI, Photoshop needs to be told how you want it to react to your tablet.
