No that's just not how this works. He is trying to set up columns and put a gap between the words and the images, but without using columns. Just use columns.
[columns=120]
---120px wide image goes here---
[nextcol=20]
[nextcol=400]
lots of text goes here
[nextcol=20]
[nextcol=120]
---120px wide image goes here---
[/columns]
You can just do that. It may take a little tweaking of the center column width to fill in the space properly but then it should look right. This is what people are already doing in their guides, just that they have been using black on black text to expand a column, now they can just specify a width instead.

To be clear I wasn't particularly looking to set up columns without using the coding, i was simply noting that in order to put spaces in between words in one line i could potentially USE columns but it was inconvenient.

I don't understand what it is you're trying to do, so I can't help you. If you can show me an example?
The new tags are up. <- 50px wide space tag [space=50]. Columns (and nextcol) tags can now take an optional width parameter to help you with layouts.
Note that, we do have table tags but, you should not use them for layouts. They are not complete yet and once we finish them, they will have coloring and borders set up for displaying tabular data which will ruin your layout.
If there are things that columns are too limiting for layout-wise we can consider an alternative, but tables should be used for data only. I'm open to suggestions on how to improve the columns tags :) I will be adding top/bottom/middle alignment options shortly, as sometimes defaulting to middle is annoying.

(Complete guess below, prepare to disregard entirely)
I think he just wishes every space he enters factored in on the page. I believe the site is set up to remove additional consecutive spaces automatically.
If I hit the space bar 5 times in a row, when I publish only one space will show.

no no, you've done it perfectly. Long story short there simply wasnt an easy way to easily add space in between any set to words on a line. This change fixes exactly what I was talking about.
If you go to the support section of my guide you'll see the categories under the image of every support. I spaced those words out using columns and hiding the space i created in between them with black text. I recommended this change so that I could have spaced out those words in a much shorter fashion.

^ did this using the new tags. A way bigger pain to do this using columns. Duff's hit the nail on the head, though I wasnt actually suggesting every space i hit show up, simply a way to control said spacing.

Anyway, the issue is relating to the spacing thingy. :P

Ah ok. Yeah the only issue is, if your words wrap, the [space] tag won't help you. The whole thing will wrap. But it does work of the total width of your content and spaces, is not wider than the width of the page, so it doesn't wrap. Otherwise you have to do it with columns so that the content wraps within the columns themselves.
That is much easier now though, since you can define column widths and not waste time doing black on black text and messing about.
