In my experience, having more then a little bit of extra attack damage on Akali is a waste of money. All 3 of her damaging abilities and even her autoattacks scale with AP. Add a Lich Bane that is up every 2 seconds because of her extremely low cooldowns, and her AP-based damage is ridiculously high.

Hextech Gunblade is a great item on her, but after that it's much more effective to get AP items.
