A reply to Your post, in order:
- She is far from uncommon. Despite all her nerfs she still crops up fairly regularly at top Elo.
- Yes she is fun :) She's my go-to champion for when I'm not sure what I want to play lol.
- Ionian Boots are not needed, her CDs are low enough as it is. Consider Berz Greaves for more DPS with Hiten style, Merc Treads to just shrug off enemy CC, or Ninja Tabi if you're going anti-ad carry.
- Tri Force is the generally accepted core item on Irelia. Although Hextech Gunblade can be quite fun too if you want a more reliable slow.
- Guinsoo's Rageblade is pretty meh on Irelia, her AP ratios are pretty bad. I'd rather have a Wit's End for more attack speed.
- Banshee's Veil is Pretty reasonable on Irelia.
- Bloodthirster is nice, don't get me wrong, but it leaves Irelia desperately squishy.
- Most builds recommend tanky because she still has reasonable burst with just Tri Force. And in top lane (her general home) tankiness is what is usually needed.
As far as I can tell, the most common items on Irelia are Tri Force, Randuins Omen, Wit's End, and Merc Treads. They're really common because they're so strong in conjunction with her kit.
For a more damage-oriented build, try Hextech Gunblade, Frozen Mallet, Maw of Malmortius, Wit's End, and boots.

This is my usual Irelia build:
Mercury's Treads
Trinity Force
Wit's End
Randuin's Omen
Guardian Angel
Bloodthirster

Heart of Gold and philosopher's stone into Randuin's Omen and Shurelya's Battlesong is good, as Irelia needs a lot of farm to be effective.
Then you build Mercury's Treads because 70% CC reduction is OP.
Everything else is pretty situational, but Wit's End or some other attack speed items are really good for her.
And don't build any damage items >.> she does plenty with Hiten Style + attack speed.

Excuse you, no damage items? Bloodthirster is a great final item on Irelia >.>

No its not >.>
More attack speed + Hiten Style will always outdamage any AD item in its place.
Think about it: Squishies late game have about 150 armor (from Zhonyas, GA etc) which is a 60% damage reduction.
Full stacks on a BT will give 100 AD, reduced to 40 damage after resists. That 3k gold could have been spent on tankiness that will let you do 1 or more auto-attack, which is 75 True damage. With that one extra attack because of tankiness, you will already outdamage a fully stacked BT.
Which is why you go full tank + some attack speed.

Frozen Heart is more situational imo.

I just got myself a brand new Irelia and I'm pretty amazed about how much fun she is. I barely see somebody playing with her (btw. why is that?), which is think is dumb because of how fun she is. Anyways I've been trying out different builds and i was just gonna hear y'alls opionions.
I usuall go with
Ionian Boots of Lucidity so I can use her ulti more often.
Second obviously is Trinity Force, it just gives you a huge dmg burst.
Then I go with Guinsoo's Rageblade, Banshee's Veil and Bloodthirster. I haven't gotten any further so I'm not sure what would be next.
One thing I noticed is that pretty much every guide has a pretty tanky build, which I really don't understand because her nuking potential can be huge! Anyways, let me hear what you think!
