I just thought I'd point out some of the major changes Android has been through over the years.
I got the urge to do this because I just got Android 4.1 and I'm loving it. IT'S SO SMOOTH.

UI = User Interface = all the menus and most things you see on the screen are parts of the interface.

Android 1.0 (Apple Pie) was very basic, but did use the Android Market at the very least.
Android 1.5 (Cupcake) introduced on-screen keyboard(touch), widgets, screen flipping, video playback and bluetooth support.

Android 2.0 (Eclair) introduced an updated UI, APIs and HTML support.
Android 2.2 (Froyo) performance improvements, Flash support and USB tethering.
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) introduced equalizer, performance improvements, gyro usage in apps/games and NFC support.

Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) multi core CPU support and a tablet-adjusted UI.

Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) introduced a GREAT looking UI and loads of usability/UI improvements system-wide, task manager and recent apps in one easily accessed menu, resizable widgets and screen rotation animations.
Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) introduced UI improvements, easier icon and widget moving and project butter. Project butter makes all animations in the UI SOOO SMOOTH and improves the overall performance by optimizing the command pipeline.

65% of all android phones are running 2.3 right now and over 60% of all phones on the market are using Android while I believe roughly 30% use IOS.

For me Android 4.0 nailed the look and usability real hard and 4.1 made it smooth as butter.
I'm sad that they removed the screen-locking animation on my Nexus S with 4.1 though :(

Sweet.

I was actually thinking of getting
FireFox OS because I liked the idea.
But it seems more and more likely that
I'd get Android; thus, a brief history overview
was very nice. Thanks. +rep to you.

I'm waiting for 4.1 on my huawei, it's supposed to come out next week or so, but I'll probably only get it late next month.

As a purist myself, I'd recommend getting a Google Nexus phone(I got Nexus S, newest one is Galaxy Nexus) or a Samsung Galaxy SIII.

The advantage of having a Nexus phone is that you have a phone 100% free of ****. That means that you won't get any annoying apps that you don't want on the phone and you'll always get the latest Android updates a lot quicker than other manifacturers. I just got 4.1 for example, while my sister who's using a HTC phone just got 4.0. Some other manifacturers don't even update to some new versions (you miss lots of bugfixes), HTC are especially bad at updating their ****.
The advantage of having a Samsung flagship phone is the hardware. They have good cameras, they're very thin and they've always got the latest cutting edge hardware. Sadly they got some bloatware and unnecessary modifications to the UI, which Nexus phones doesn't have.

Only a ****** would get a galaxy S3. If you drop it the screen simply shatters. It's one of the weakest phones I've ever seen. No thank you. To me the galaxy S2 is still better than the S3.

And if you want a phone 100% free of **** all you have to do is root it. As far as I know you can root any phone you want. Just back it up to restore the factory applications in case it needs to be repaired.

I like my huawei, it's cheap, sturdy and good enough to run everything I want.

It has Gorilla Glass 2. You'll need a hammer to crack it or stab it with a knife to scratch it.
I don't know about the rest of the hardware, but the screen should be durable as ****.

Rooting can brick devices. Most users will probably not want to change ROM.
I think updating may be a big hastle too, but that depends on whether you have to update it manually or if you get OTA update, I don't know.

HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH
watch the clip and you'll be laughing too. The last test was pretty harmless and yet the screen was left in that state. On the second test it was really lucky on the way it fell, if it had fallen like the iphone it would probably not be in one piece.

what do you mean by "Rooting can brick devices"?
EDIT: I just read up on it, and it seems you can only brick it if you don't know what you're doing.

Weird.. The specifications say that the SIII has Gorilla Glass 2. Maybe there's some manifacturing problems?

Here's what Gorilla Glass 2 should be able to handle:

I meant Flashing can brick your phone. IE; changing ROM(OS). Rooting is pretty harmless. (you need to flash a different ROM to get the default Android onto a Samsung/whatever brand phone)

From the experience of me and friends/relatives HTC phones are unreliable. They reboot more than any other brand. I think that is partially due to HTC being bad at updating their Android.

Gorilla glass alone may be strong, but don't forget that on a phone there's something underneath it. If you wear a kevlar and take a sledgehammer to the chest the kevlar will remain in pristine condition, but you'll be sent to the hospital with a few broken ribs. The same thing happens with phones, even if the gorilla glass is perfectly fine the lcd display underneath it will be broken.

Even so, why would you want to change ROMs if the OS is up to date? With root access you can change the UI and uninstall any applications you don't want.
