Zed is good since you can escape pretty narrow spots once you start dominating him, although playing him godly requires a lot more than people know.
Kha'zix also can deal tons of damage and go away with
Leap.

Thank you Byron for 2014's loudest laugh up till today

this is tough to answer because we don't know how experienced you are in the game.
From your original list I would say to not get
Volibear if you are looking for a melee fighter top....if you are a jungler than it is ok. voli is decent top but only with a good amount of practice and a decent matchup.
Zed is solid top melee but as the others pointed out he is tough to master.
Master Yi is very situational so I don't know if I would recommend him.
Darius is the epitome of pubstomp in your face melee. not a bad choice there.
I agree with luther.
Riven is a solid melee champ that isn't too difficult to use. she has a good kit and scales pretty well.
also agree with scott.
Jax
Wukong would be good choices for a newer player....
Renekton and
Xin Zhao are a little tougher to play well imo.

Thanks to jhoijhoi for my signature!
Jax is a good choice. He has a good abilities, a nice mix of AP and AD, and his ultimate is a defense buff that turns your AP or AD into MR or Armor. He can also wreck a tower fairly quick.
Riven is a pretty good choice, as well.
As Bioalchemist pointed out, Yi is situational. He's really simple to use, with two viable builds. AD Yi is a master duelist, and can 1v1 most champs. AP Yi is a beast in team fights, but ends up a one trick pony.
He's also a great tower killer and one of (if not THE) backdoor champ.
Between the three, Jax is a better beginner, then Yi, then Riven in order of complexity. The learning curve between the three isn't very extreme.
Don't do Darius. I hate laning against him and the less who play him, the less often I'll have to see him. ;)

I like laning against him...when I'm

I just don't have a good counter against him, and whenever I'm thinking "Man, I haven't played Teemo in a while..." BOOM! I spend 20 minutes crying under a tower or Darius will squish me.
Seriously, don't pick Darius. He's SOOOO bad. Just not worth the time. Please. Don't.
