Just laughing through while reading this entire article.
Thank you jhoijhoi, Keondre, LaCorpse, The_Nameless_Bard, Arcana3, Apfeljack, Hogopogo, eddie199, Xiaowiriamu, and JEFFY40HANDS for the spectacular sigs!
Ya, I saw it yesterday.
Pretty damn hilarious.
It only works in a game of this thematic type though, so I hope other games won't try to emulate this.
The sad thing about this is that the devs didn't get this game on a single big online store. They only sold it through their own website. Seeing as Steam is the biggest platform on the PC right now: the difference between a game being sold on Steam and not is HUGE. They got like 90% piracy from only selling it on their site(I also think the torrent was up before the game was out). If they had it on Steam the numbers might very well have been the reverse or at least below 50% piracy. If you don't provide your games on a platform people want to use, then you can damn well count on it being pirated to all hell.
It's all about customer satisfaction in the end.

They are trying to get it green-lighted on steam. Prior to this little experiment, there was little hope of it actually passing (Speculation). I'm interested to see where this game/company goes now after all of this.

Hmm, okay. I've heard of weird cases of games being denied by Steam(UNepic for example), but the great majority that actually tries do get on there(I mean, if Bad Rats can get on there, why can't a real game?).
So did the devs even try to get on Steam without greenlight?
"Blizzard spoke thus; Thou shalt not BM. And the players replied Nay, I shall Play my hand with Lethal already on the board. And so Blizzard sent unto them this Brawl of Yogg, As a lesson for their sins of Pride and Greed, for he is the Prophet of Madness and RNG. On that day, the tavern descended into an era of chaos and darkness, until the weekend passed and everyone forgot all about it. Amen. Book of SMOrc, Verse 20, Chapter 4." - Feam T

From what I've heard (questionable sources), they tried, but they had to still go through the green-light process.
If I ever make a game myself and release it without a publisher, then I think I'm gonna release the game completely DRM-free.
I would also release a version of the game on the pirate bay. And just like these guys I would modify the game slightly for the pirated version, but unlike these devs I would not change the gameplay in any way. I would put links to places where you can buy my game legally in a corner of the main menu. Nothing too imposing, but noticeable enough to warrant a look. And also possibly a one time prompt saying that I appreciate them them taking their time to play the game and that if they like the game that they should consider buying it by clicking the links in the corner.
It's very important that it isn't imposing, because everyone is a potential customer and you win no friends by annoying people.

This is probably one of the most intriguing experiments I've ever seen an indie game developer do. What are your thoughts, ye fellow MOBAfailians?
