i honestly don't understand the problem. ok, the government is monitoring you messages and such, but who cares? if you're doing nothing wrong then nothing will happen to you. are you worried about your intimate lives or something? the government wont be like "oh, this dude likes weird porn, lets tell that to his friends just for the lolz"

normally I kinda disagree with moon in a lot of political issues but in this, I do. It's not a matter of whether or not I'm doing anything wrong; It's a matter of continuous incremental encroachment. It begs the question of how much government should be able to watch our lives, especially in an age where the most powerful weapon is information.

you are missing the point shadow...it is not necessarily that they are gathering information and spying on their own citizens per say that is just one example of the fact that they are continuing to expand and monitor more without any knowledge of the american people. i don't mind (to an extent) if someone monitors my internet to see all the information I download if I know they are watching as much as i mind if they have a wiretap, camera, etc...watching everything I do...without anyone's knowledge but their own, and apparently they are progressing to have the ability to do all of that without me knowing or without court orders. THAT is a problem.
