With other words, Google(search engine, add system, gmail, blogger, maps, chrome, youtube, docs, earth etc), Twitter, Whatsapp, Microsoft(hotmail, msn, skype, skydrive, bing etc.), Dropbox, Facebook and many more all can be and probably are being forced to give not only the government but whatever instances access to their information. That's a lot.
Not only does that mean passwords, phone numbers, addresses, social contacts, opinions, skill, work, email, voice, looks, location, predictions on when you come online, search history, watch history, personal files and much more(add internet, electricity and all other service uses if you live in the USA, though they don't give a **** and probably also know that of other countries, graphs show especially germany so be warned) are in their hands, but they can also connect it all together and get a very detailed view of you and your life.
So who cares? Well, if you remember history correctly, what does one need to obtain world dominance and to be able to be a so-called dictator? What made the USSR so powerful? To control what people do, say and last but not least what they think. If someone knows everything about you, and also has power to influence a lot of things around you, and he would have the same over everyone else? Then it would be child's play to make you think just what he wants you to, which makes you do what he wants you to do and say what he wants you to. That's scary, in my opinion.
Look at what Google is doing already, they already make a profile of you based on all the services you use and what they buy from others(and they have loads of money). With that they already influence your search results on their "search engine". With other words, if you hate ponies and you search for ponies, you get sites about people hating ponies. If you love ponies, you get pony fansites. This isn't science fiction, it's happening right now. This makes you only get to see what you think, making you blind for other possibly better or right views. Imagine this power being held over you at every site you use daily, and with all the information of all the USA companies.
What I just said is in my opinion why we should be very afraid and cautious. They don't care about how you look naked, well perhaps they do, but it doesn't even matter if they care because the information is processed by computers, so even if you're not state enemy nr1, nr123324324 or nr23432432423473924 then you still get processed because it doesn't take manpower. Anyways, what they care for is controlling you. And even if they aren't such maniacs like the heads of the social network companies, one day they will. And then there's no way back. No worries though, if they do it right you don't realize it at all.
While a lot of us probably already guessed or perhaps even partly knew this was going on, it's still mainly kept secret. Weird, I thought we had a democracy in which the people decides and knows right? We don't live in a time of censorship anymore. Or at least, that's what I think a lot of us are thinking. In older times people at least knew what was hanging above their heads. Nowadays we simply don't. Food for thought, or so I hope.
EDIT: @Pheyniex could you please explain how this looks like heroism to you? While I don't think they act like this because they're paranoid, I really don't think it's for the good of all. I mean, they are using our information for malpractice in my opinion, and even if you don't agree on that, there is a chance those profiles get public by a hacker or some corrupt(from their point of view ;-)) people steal the information. And I wouldn't be surprised if that led to war.
********'s a pretty good fertilizer
I did not reference this specifically as heroism. Just described general behavior. However, I just want to say people simply allow themselves to be in this situation. Everyone uses basically the same networks, the same softwares and make their lives whitout care of how much information they are actually providing. Guess what, the internet is onmipresence made real. the same way you can sit on your couch and do everything online, someone else can, on their couch can know everything you do. All they need is to understand the language that you are using to scream across the web.

That organization wasn't found last week. And it was clear for a pretty long time already they were doing this. Since the Patriot Act, instances like the CIA and whatever weird names those things have, have the right to ask all the information of all USA companies, if it's needed to protect the safety/government/public(I don't know the official words). Anyways, as far as I know, some instances can decide whether something is that important by themselves, so no court or other instance is needed.

They use it to manipulate your brains so they can get world domination. And if they don't, someone else will.

I see your point now, fully agreed. I'm afraid a lot people just don't want to grasp the fact that they can and will be monitored. They have been brainwashed already by things like Google's awesome one-liners. I also wouldn't be surprised if a lot of governmental people didn't know about what was and is happening too, they don't really have to elaborate to anyone.
