Legal drinking age? None, if you can hold it you can drink it. Legal buying age: 16
But honestly, go to a gas station and you can get it from when you're 13.

Whisky... Had it once, but I drank it neat, so I'm not sure my dislike of it really counts.
It should be drank without ice in my opinion. Ice reduces the taste, and if you don't like the taste, then why are you drinking it in the first place? (there are better drinks to get drunk off)
Whiskey can vary greatly in taste, just like beer and wine. It can taste fruity and it can taste like drinking tar.
What kinds have you tried?
Do you know if you like strong taste?
Try out Laphroaig or Bowmore at some local bar or something. Laphroaig is a smoky whiskey, but still fairly mild. Bowmore is a bit less smoky and fairly mild too. It's a good middle ground between smoky and not smoky.
For less smoky stuff I guess Grants is a pretty good alternative, but I generally don't drink too much of the less smoky stuff.
Also ask the bartender to add a bit of distilled water (just a few drops). That will make the taste slightly rounder and reduce the sting of the alcohol.
I personally can't stand wine. Most normal wine is just yuck. The only wine that I can actually enjoy is the apple wine with a taste of cinnamon and vanilla that goes by the name of "Varm och Kall" (Warm and Cold) here in Sweden. It doesn't have that nasty bitterness that normal wine has. It tastes like christmas :)

To be honest, I haven't the foggiest idea what kind of whisky it was. I was at prom and one of my friends had brought some whisky in a flask (because the drinks prices were bloody horrendous) and offered me a bit. I found it... Hm, I'm not really sure how to describe. It was like something that was sickly sweet, only not actually sweet. It certainly fit the "fire in your belly" description, it was a very warm feeling drink.. Perhaps a taste I could acquire, but not one I found compelling at the time. Strong taste is probably good though, or at least, I like wine and cider with very strong flavour. Definitely not fruity, I like wine to be dry and bitter and only ever go for apple cider, I dislike berry ones. Might try pear, though.

Comming from a country where liquor is pretty much a part of every tradition that just sounds so odd to me.
In Denmark - you drink to celebrate, you drink to mourn, you drink to party and you even drink to start a party - there's no occassion where drinking is frowned upon(except driving and hunting pretty much). Hell you even give some liquor to children sometimes just to watch them drunk.
Seems like an awesome and joyful country you have there! Here, it's the law, most of the elder citizen, and the extremists that find drinking as "taboo". Hell, the law implicitly tries to enforce the religion. That's why people end up a night in jail for just having a Heineken by the beach at night with friends :/
