AP Mid-Lane. Halp?

Right. What's the deal with AP champions mid-laning? Im not especially experienced (Level 16, currently) and i'm a terrible mid-laner at the best of times. Been practising recently to try and get a more rounded game as I level up further, but i just can't get my head round AP champions primarily and then the midlane in general. (even with the likes of Yasuo, i still suck hard.) Can someone either offer some advice, or point me towards a guide or someone who can? Cheers.

Hello QuiGonRob,

AP mid commonly have a high burst potential, them being mid makes it easier to roam up or down.
Also the strenght of an ap carry comes from levels, therefore they are prefered to stand alone in lane.

So if you want to pick up AP mid, pick a champion on which you feel confortable (try different ones when you can). make sure you ward properly as mid is easy to gank when pushed up to much.

In time you get to know the champ you like more and more and it will become easier.

You could try since she is incredibly mobile, has a snare and silence, and can get incredibly powerful.

Just be warned. she is one of the most difficult champions in the game and it my take several games to get used to her, or you may never get used to her.

If you have a hard time with getting used to the lane, as it is very short. try some champions with alot of mobility/escaped. Riven might be a nice one to take as she is very mobile and offers good escaped because of it. AP champs with snare/stun abilities might also be an option. Ahri for example has her charm for early levels and level 6 escape if need be with her ult

Hey Snudge,

Cheers for answering. I've tried a few AP champions in that lane. Kassadin, Katarina, Heimerdinger, Karthus and the like. Do you have a particular suggestion as to a good champion to use? Even when i use AD champs im used to and good at in other situations (Namely: Wukong, Yasuo) I still struggle with that lane somewhat, but it's worse with AP guys, for some reason i just struggle. As i say, if you could maybe suggest a couple of champions i should try i'd appreciate that.

Typically, mid-lane has AP mages/assassins and the occassional AD assassin. This is due to the fact that mid-lane is (1) more open to jungle ganks and (2) enables mages to get to Lv6 the fastest, so they can snowball with their ultimate and then wander.

If you want to practice in the lane, the safest choice would be an AP mage with a reliable escape. I don't play assassins, so maybe other people have suggestions.

Hm, thinking about it you could be right. Actually, a few of my mastery pages are well out of date with my level -.- Le sigh. If it's that simple, i might have to eat my own face. Will update on face-eatage as it unfolds. Haha, cheers for pointing this out to me, 'preciate it. As for the APness, i guess practice makes perfect. I'm definately gonna re-do all of my mastery pages and maybe try Katarina again and see if it makes a difference. Thanks :D

You might be having trouble last-hitting and getting gold in that case, which is actually pretty likely given your summoner level (you might not carry masteries to increase your last-hitting ability). Runes also help a lot.

Junglers and assassins are pretty reliant on their out-of-game stats lol The former for surviving, the latter for snowballing early.

I usually find with AP mages/assassins that they're really difficult to grasp. Mid-lane i do have a little bit more success with the AD assassins, but i still struggle a lot with it. I also find that junglers tend to be lax on help when asked too, which is a little irksome at times. I appreciate the reply and the information, Cheers!

When i wasn't level 30 i played only .

If you wanna try a good champ and really safe, just try , she is easy to play, not like and you will win your lane more that you will loose

I allways think that Morgana was a boring and a bad champ, but when she got in a free week i tried her and i was amazed by my results, it's not the most fun to play, but you'll get good results :)

Funnily enough, in response to an answer above i re-set all my masteries and have been using the new Xerath, to some success. I also now own LeBlanc, as a yardstone - When i can use LB correctly, that'll be good times :D With Xerath, i've only had problems thusfar taking on Brand in-lane. He absolutely smashes Annie into the dust (and Tibbers, thank god) I've also got Katarina, whom i use sparingly (and badly). Im gaining enough IP for another champ soon, do you think Morgana is a good way to go then? Thanks for replying :)

Yes, if he try without general knowledge of mid lane or really good mechanichs would be suicidal.

She is incredibly tough though. or someone like her would probably be better. is pretty strong as well though

Well, I think that first you need to understand a lot of things in general about the game. There are concepts that some laners need to have in order to succed.

- Why AP champs usually go to middle lane? Mid lane is the shortest, and AP champs are squishy and have no escape. So when the jungler comes, you need to run fast. Also, AP champs rely on their ultimate. Basically, they get a lot of duel power when they hit lvl 6. And AP champs need items (you can't get AP without items, runes or masteries) so they need gold. That's why they are solo laners and go mid and not top.

- Why AD assassins go mid? Assassins need a squishy target to succed. Also, they have a lot of mobility, giving a hard time to AP champs due to the difficult of landing a skillshot. So basically, they go mid to get feed.

What are the basic concepts of the mid laner? You need to know a few things. Last hittin is really important, and avoid dying. Only go for a kill if your enemy is in a bad position or if your jungler is coming, don't go all in if not cause the enemy jungler can kill you then. Also a mid laner needs to roam a lot, in order to help other lines and get a few kills and assists. Play defensive against assassins and if you can play offensive and zone your enemy if you see that you are outplaying them, but never go to far for a kill (a kill and 15 cs are the same amount of gold)

There isn`t much you can do about teammates xD. However, on last hitting, use your habilities some times. It is good to know how and when. If you are in a safe spot, warded, and not pushing your lane, try to use your q to get the caster minions or even w+q. The thing here is to know that you will be safe after that, meaning: they can´t retaliate, jungler is not near or you know where he is and you are not pushing your lane. Remember that last hitting with AP champs can be difficult if you are not used to. If you really want to learn how to last hit properly, I suggest a 15 min custom game, just you. Try to reach at least 100 cs, with no items. Start with some easy champs (Zed for example) and then go with more difficult ones (I think Soraka is the hardest with just AA)

As commented below, Xerath makes these concepts relatively easy. My problem i think is that knowing these concepts and pulling them off correctly are two different things :P I know last-hitting is important, but my timing is terrible sometimes! I suppose that will come with time. I also suffer sometimes with getting literally NO support from teammates in-game. I played a game yesterday VS a Brand, with whom i was struggling to contain, so i call for help. Wukong from the top lane comes down, stands around for a few moments, does nothing, then walks back to top-lane -.- It's not cool to blame your team - I should have locked brand down more - But that was actually less helpful than just NOT coming down from top, because then top was just under-staffed. Blee, twas a bad game. Aaanyway :P The brand played well enough, so i guess i was just out-played. It happens. I do think i need to learn more about the lane and how it works though. i think i could help you with yasuo a little. you have to know his build and how to play him. if you get that, then maybe u can get good with Yasuo. and otherwise try anouter champion

Thanks for the reply. It's not so much the champion, with Yasuo as the lane, for me. I'm terrible mid-lane in general :) i was more looking for general advice on midlaning, with a slant towards AP-based champions, because it's there that i struggle the most.
