There's generally around 3-5 different champions that are the best hands-down in their particular lane, in the meta at least. This is especially true in the top lane, where trying to pull of something weird against a standard champion will end up with you getting stomped more than half the time.
But there's actually only around 33% of champs that are virtually never played because they're considered Trash-Tier and too niche-ey to consistently play, the rest are up to preference.

It would be impossible to make every champion in the game equal. Which it seems like what you're asking for. With nearly 120 champs balancing each one perfectly would be impossible. Of course there is going to be OP champs at any given time, just like some champs will be weak.
The trick to climbing is to keep current on the meta. As champions get nerfed or buffed, new champions become viable. Nautlius was OP for a large portion of season 3. He could easily make a comeback. Isolate the OP champions from each patch and spam them mercilessly and you'll climb. Boohoo X isn't viable why is Y so OP. Maybe play Y and get some sweet sweet ELO.

Yes but my point was that it sucks balls that you HAVE to "keep up with the meta". You cant learn a champion or too and play them and win, you leanr a champion and BANG NERF! and now you HAVE to use that other champion which riot made better. And thats why it is a marketing plan, riot relies on the fact that high elo players "keep up with the meta" and buy the champs that previously no one used, and gain sick profit without the pain. My utopic league of legends would be a game where everyone used champions they like and are good at, and you would face many different macth ups. now its a game where you have to, as you said "keep up with the meta" and use champions that are good at the time, no matter what champion you like more.

Champion nerf means it's harder to win, not that it's impossible to win. Get better at this game.
You can get to challenger with literally any champion. At any given time on NA alone someone has reached challenger playing nearly every champion. Hell Zekent got to challenger in season 3 with mid/top AP Janna. You can play whatever you want. Anyone can, I just got carried by a support Leblanc. Playing FotM champions just makes it easier. Its not required to pick FotM. Play whatever you want and get really good at whatever champ you have the most fun playing.
