he has no cc and no movement abilities, he is supposed to be in melee range to deal damage but is too squishie even with his passive and shield to even get that close because he has no gapclosers or cc, his ult is good but the rest of his kit brings him down

Can anyone explain to me why he isn't played more often? I can understand that the lack of escapes and crowd control are a major factor, but look at Ryze. He is in a very similar situation as Morde, but sees alot more gameplay. Yes, he has the snare, but that's all he has, and it is a very short snare at that.
Once you truly learn how to play Morde, you can easily work around those 2 limiting factors.
