I think 
Lulu is the most versatile, you can play mid, support, top and maybe ADC and jungler for fun. She has an absurd amount of utility and her damage is really high. Kayle would be the second option in versatility, less utility than Lulu but still has a huuge damage and some nice utility.

Support: Braum is also extremely OP at the moment and I've tried playing him top AD and it worked very well. Thresh (you can play him offtank as well, IMO) and Nami are pretty good. Morgana can be played at both mid and support, and shes still quite good.
For ADC: Kog'Maw, Lucian and Jinx are very powerful right now, but if you want versatility, ADC is not the way to go.
Top: Kayle I think is the champion that scales better late game, she can also be played top, mid, support and maybe jg. Jax, Rengar, Fiora and Yasuo (that can be played mid) are good options too.
Mid: Ziggs has a nice amount of damage and huge clear wave. Orianna and Lulu are safe picks that can handle very well almost any other champion. Kassadin is still super strong and there's Syndra too.

Ive been playing LoL for a little while, i stopped a year ago or so and i came back to it recently in a big way. I have been playing several bot matches every day or with friends. Im not big into ranked matches. Yet.
Ill start off by telling you who i play now. I only own 2 characters, Kha and Naut. I can play them both fairly well in solo queue or with a friend in bot matches. I also went through the most recent free characters and played each one several times and found myself very successful with each one. I do equally well with Lulu as i do with Nocturne as i do with Twitch. I dont necessarily like playing the same roll all the time, so picking a new champ is very hard for me to do.
Judging by the 2 characters i own, i definitely love ganking and dragging people with a colossal anchor. But i know that im not good enough with them to try ranked. Im terrible at jungling Kha or id play him. Im really terrible at jungling period.
So.
Im trying to find a good character for current meta who i can try playing in ranked matches. I tend to play by myself (as in without real life friends or anyone else in a match that i know). I learn the characters fairly quickly to not just feed the whole time, so learning curves or skill caps dont intimidate me. I can play anywhere fairly well (except jungle) so it really comes down to who is fun and versatile. I know thats not terribly informative, but ive looked through a ton of champs in-depth in all kinds of rolls and cant find one i like.
I will say that i have had a lot of fun with Lulu and Leona and i get a fair amount of kills with them. So i think im leaning for support, but i worry in rank that i wont have fun if my team is awful.
