Rush tear if you think you can win lane with it, if not just skip it and go for RoA, into Zhonya's. Then upgrade your Tear if you bought it.
Viable items after that are Rabadon's, Void Staff, Lich Bane, DFG, Iceborn Gauntlet, Frozen Heart. Those are all I can think of that I've bought. The armor ones are good situationally vs high AD damage comps.
As for tips... just play well.
Sigh this game was so annoying.
No one would follow up on my ganks early-game, so I wasted so much time just showing up on a lane to R Q E the enemy and then walk back to mid lane. Fizz roamed to the opposite lane of whatever I ganked and always got kills out of it. Gnar refused to group in team-fights so I could basically do nothing as I was already behind and there was no way I could clean up kills in 4v5 fights, so I basically went in, did damage, Zhonya'd, then died, over and over and over again.
