Champion Build Guide
Your basic trade is W → E → Q. Your standard all-in is R → Auto → E → Q → Auto → Ignite. You max Q → E → W. You take Electrocute for burst, Conqueror for bruiser matchups, and First Strike if you're looking to scale into a late-game monster. Your core build is Eclipse → Ionian Boots → Ravenous Hydra → Black Cleaver → Serylda's Grudge. You ban Xerath or Lissandra every game. You win by out-rotating your opponent, not by out-farming them. You are the king of the side lane. You lose if you teamfight head-on, if you waste your W, or if you forget to track the enemy jungler
Zed is best picked into immobile mages like Lux, Xerath, or Vel'Koz. He struggles against champions who can negate his burst with shields, stasis, or point-and-click CC, such as Lissandra, Malzahar, or Kayle. Your ban should be Xerath or Lissandra every game. Zed has a high skill floor and a nearly limitless skill ceiling, making him one of the most rewarding champions to master in the game.
Shadow Play: Your W (Living Shadow) and R (Death Mark) create untargetable clones that mimic your abilities. This allows for mind games, dodging skillshots, and dealing devastating damage from two angles at once.
Dueling: Few champions can match Zed in a sidelane 1v1 after level 6 and two items. You use your shadows to outplay, dodge key abilities, and secure a kill on a split-pushing foe.
Picks: Zed excels at catching an enemy carry who is wandering alone in the jungle. Your high mobility and burst damage make you a nightmare for isolated targets.
You are not a teamfighter. You are not a frontliner. You are a surgical assassin who removes a key target from the map before a fight even breaks out, creating a permanent numbers advantage for your team. If you are the first person to enter a 5v5 fight, you are playing incorrectly.
Q – Razor Shuriken: Zed and his shadows throw a shuriken, dealing physical damage to the first enemy hit. Damage is reduced by 60% for enemies beyond the first. Your primary poke, wave-clear, and damage ability.
W – Living Shadow: Zed throws a shadow that lasts for 5 seconds. Reactivating W swaps Zed with the shadow. The shadow mimics Zed's Q and E. This is your engage, escape, and outplay tool.
E – Shadow Slash: Zed and his shadows slash in a circle, dealing physical damage. Hitting an enemy champion with E reduces W's cooldown by 2 seconds. Your main source of close-range damage, slow, and W cooldown reduction.
R – Death Mark: Zed dashes to an enemy champion, becoming untargetable and marking them. After 3 seconds, the mark detonates, dealing physical damage equal to 100% of all damage Zed dealt to the target during the mark. Your primary assassination tool.
Leveling Order: R > Q > E > W. Max Q first for poke and wave clear. Max E second for the damage and W cooldown reduction. W is maxed last as it's primarily a utility ability.
Energy Management: Zed is an energy champion. Your passive restores energy when you and your shadows hit the same enemy with an ability. To maximize your energy in fights, ensure your abilities hit from both you and your shadow to get the energy refund.
The Triple Shuriken: This is the core mechanic for maximizing damage. By placing your W and R shadow on a target, you can hit them with three shurikens at once, dealing massive damage. The combo is R → Auto → W next to the target → Q → E → Auto.
Swapping for Jukes: You can swap with your W or R shadow at any time. This is used to dodge key abilities (e.g., Lux Q, Fizz R) and to reposition in fights. A common juke is to R onto a target, then immediately swap back to your R shadow's starting location to dodge their retaliation.
Auto Attack Resets: Your abilities do not naturally reset your auto timer, but your E (Shadow Slash) is an instant-cast and can be weaved between autos smoothly. The basic trading pattern is Auto → E → Auto for quick damage.
Level 1: Start Q. Focus on last-hitting. Use Q to poke the enemy if they step up, but primarily use it to secure cs. You are relatively weak at level 1.
Level 2: Take W. You can now use the W → E → Q combo for poke, but be mindful of your energy. Do not overextend.
Level 3: Take E. This is your first major power spike. You now have your full poke and trade combo. Look for windows when the enemy uses a key ability on the wave. If Lux throws her E to clear minions, you can W → W → E → Q onto her for a strong trade.
Levels 4-5: Continue to poke and farm. Look to shove the wave and roam to the jungle to place deep wards. Zed's roaming is strong but his ganks are not as reliable as an assassin like Fizz. You are looking for skirmishes, not forced ganks.
Level 6: Your ultimate is up. This is your all-in window. The standard all-in is R onto the enemy → Auto → E → Q → Auto → Ignite. The mark will pop and secure the kill. If you have poked them down to 60% HP beforehand, they are dead. After killing or forcing your laner to recall, shove the wave and look for a roam.
Early Game Summary: You are looking to scale, but with kill pressure. You want to hit your item spikes. A good Zed will have 70+ CS at 10 minutes and will have either solo-killed their laner or forced them out of lane to secure a roam.
Roaming Priority: After taking mid tower or when your bot lane rotates mid, you move to a side lane. You split-push the wave past the river, then rotate into the enemy jungle and look for picks with your support or jungler. Place control wards in the enemy jungle to help you find these picking opportunities.
Objective Fights: For Dragon or Baron fights, you do not front-line. You stay in a flank position. Wait for the enemy team to commit their CC on your frontline, then you R onto the enemy ADC or support from the fog of war. Your goal is to kill one and then use your W to escape over a wall.
Split Pushing: This is Zed's primary win condition. You have excellent wave-clear with Ravenous Hydra and can take towers quickly. You push a side lane, forcing the enemy to send someone to stop you. If they send one person, you kill them. If they send two, your team fights 4v3 on the other side of the map.
Mid Game Summary: You are the king of the side lane. You push waves, invade the enemy jungle, and show up to fights only to clean up. You do not group mid and ARAM. You create pressure elsewhere.
The Flanking Rule: Never walk into a teamfight from the front. Always approach from the side or from behind. Your goal is to find the enemy ADC or support and delete them before the fight truly begins.
Target Priority: Your target is always the most vulnerable, high-value carry. If the enemy ADC has a shield support (like Lulu or Janna), you may need to kill the support first. Once your target is marked with R, they will likely panic and use their abilities, making them vulnerable to your follow-up.
Post-Ultimate Escape: After you R onto a target and use your combo, you will be in a dangerous position. Immediately swap to your W shadow or your R shadow to escape to safety. A good Zed never stays in the middle of a fight.
The Cleanup Role: If you are not able to get a flank, you wait. Wait for the fight to break out. After the enemy has blown their major cooldowns, you enter and clean up the low-health targets with your ultimate.
High Elo (Diamond 2+): Zed has a ~49-50% win rate. He is picked as a counter to immobile mages and is often paired with AP junglers to create mixed damage threats. Electrocute remains the most common keystone for its burst potential. A bruiser Conqueror build (Eclipse → Black Cleaver → Death's Dance) is seeing niche play against heavy AD or tanky comps for survivability.
Mid Elo (Platinum to Diamond 2): Zed has a ~51% win rate. First Strike becomes more popular here as games tend to go longer, allowing Zed to scale his gold lead through poke.
Low Elo (Gold and below): Zed has a ~52% win rate. Players do not respect his level 3 power spike and fail to build Zhonya's Hourglass. Electrocute is the default and the easiest to execute.
Current Bans: Xerath (31% win rate against him), Lissandra, Malzahar, and Akshan.
Current Patch Notes Affecting Zed: No direct changes to Zed. The meta has shifted slightly towards durability, making the bruiser Conqueror build (Eclipse into Black Cleaver) more viable than full-lethality one-shot builds in many games.
Second Item:
Ionian Boots of Lucidity: These are almost always the best choice for the ability haste and summoner spell cooldown reduction.
Ravenous Hydra: Provides wave-clear, sustain, and AD. This is your go-to second item for pushing side lanes and sustaining through poke.
Third Item:
Black Cleaver: The standard third item. It gives AD, health, and ability haste, and its armor-shred passive works perfectly with Zed's physical damage.
Serylda's Grudge: You build this third if the enemy team is stacking armor early.
Fourth & Fifth Items:
Serylda's Grudge: If not built third, this is your fourth item for percent armor penetration.
Edge of Night: Spell shield is invaluable against champions with a single, key CC ability (e.g., Lux Q, Blitzcrank Q).
Full Standard Build Example: Eclipse → Ionian Boots of Lucidity → Ravenous Hydra → Black Cleaver → Serylda's Grudge → Edge of Night / Guardian Angel.
Full Bruiser Build Example: Eclipse → Plated Steelcaps → Black Cleaver → Death's Dance → Ravenous Hydra → Maw of Malmortius.
The enemy team has 3 or more squishy champions.
You are the only AD threat on your team.
You are confident in your ability to one-shot the backline and escape.
You are against a squishy mid laner (Lux, Xerath, Vel'Koz).
Pick Bruiser / Conqueror (Eclipse → Black Cleaver → Death's Dance) when:
The enemy team has 2 or more bruisers/tanks.
Your team already has high damage and needs someone to soak some attention.
You are against a melee mid laner (Yasuo, Yone, Irelia, Sylas).
You need survivability to outlast extended fights.
Full All-In (Level 6+): R → Auto → E → Q → Auto → Ignite. This is the standard all-in. You R onto them, auto, then immediately E and Q. The auto after the R is crucial for your passive damage.
Triple Shuriken (Max Damage): R → Auto → W next to the target → Q → E → Auto. This is your highest damage combo. You place your W shadow right on top of the target, so your R shadow and W shadow both fire their shurikens with yours, hitting the target three times.
Shadow Juke Escape: W (in one direction) → R onto enemy → E → Q → Auto → W (swap to your original W shadow) → Run away. This is your classic "outplay" combo. You engage from your W shadow, then instantly swap back to it after your R combo, leaving the enemy confused and in a cloud of smoke.
W-Q Buffer: You can cast Q while your W shadow is in the air. This can catch enemies off guard, as they will see the shadow appear and the shuriken fly out almost instantly.
E for W Cooldown: Remember that hitting an enemy champion with E reduces your W's cooldown by 2 seconds. In extended fights, spamming E on cooldown is crucial for getting your W back up for another escape or damage rotation.
The "Unseen" R: If you cast R from the fog of war, the enemy will not see the mark's indicator until you appear on them. This is invaluable for ganking.
Missing Qs: Your Q is your main damage. If you miss it, you lose the trade.
Teamfighting Head-On: Walking into the enemy team from the front and getting CC'd instantly.
Not Using Your Passive: Forgetting to weave in auto-attacks against low-health targets to secure the kill.
Not Tracking Zhonya's: Using your ultimate on a target with Zhonya's available, only for them to negate your entire burst.
Falling Behind in CS: Zed is an item-dependent champion. Falling behind in farm will make you useless.
Overstaying After a Pick: You get a kill on the enemy ADC, but you stay in the lane and get collapsed on. You give up your shutdown gold. Get the kill and reset.
Dying with Flash Up: You have an extra escape. Use it.
Is Xerath open? → Ban him.
Does enemy team have 3+ tanks? → Build Bruiser (Conqueror, Eclipse → Black Cleaver).
Does enemy team have 3+ squishies? → Build Lethality (Electrocute, Eclipse → Ghostblade).
Laning Phase (0-10 minutes):
Is the enemy mid's key ability down? → W → W → E → Q trade.
Is the enemy jungler missing? → Play safe, stay on your side of the lane.
Is my ultimate up? → All-in. Is it down? → Farm and poke.
Did my laner recall? → Shove the wave and roam to the enemy jungle for a deep ward.
Mid Game (10-25 minutes):
Is my team fighting? → Flank. Do not engage from the front.
Is there a side wave pushing? → Go catch it. Split-push.
Is an enemy carry isolated? → Kill them. Use your shadows to escape.
Teamfights (25+ minutes):
Have I seen the enemy's major CC? → No: Wait. Yes: R onto their ADC.
Is my ultimate on cooldown? → Do not teamfight. Go split-push.
A-Tier (Good Picks): Zed (in the right hands).
B-Tier (Skill Matchups): Yone, Yasuo, Sylas, Akali, LeBlanc.
C-Tier (Losing Matchups): Fizz, Diana, Malphite.
D-Tier (Hard Counters – Dodge/Ban): Xerath, Lissandra, Malzahar, Akshan, Annie.
Best Junglers with Zed:
Elise, Diana, Fiddlesticks (AP Junglers): Forces the enemy to build mixed resistances.
Lee Sin, Vi, Jarvan IV (AD Junglers): Strong early game, helps Zed snowball his lead.
Best Supports with Zed:
Thresh, Blitzcrank, Pyke: Champions that can hook and lock down a target, allowing Zed to easily land his triple shuriken.
Worst Team Comps for Zed: Teams with point-and-click CC (Lissandra, Malzahar, Maokai) or multiple shielders (Janna, Lulu, Karma).
Best Team Comps for Zed: Teams with strong engage (Malphite, Amumu) and magic damage dealers, forcing the enemy to itemize against both of you.
Current Winrates (Emerald+, Global):
Electrocute: ~49.5% (60% pick rate)
First Strike: ~50.5% (25% pick rate)
Conqueror: ~49% (10% pick rate)
Eclipse first item: ~50.5%
Ravenous Hydra second item: ~51%
Black Cleaver third item: ~51.5%
This guide gives you the blueprint. Your job is to put in the hours in the practice tool, watch your replays, and internalize the matchups. Learn the triple shuriken. Learn to manage your shadows. Learn to be patient in teamfights.
I have played Zed since his release. I have seen him through the era of the 40% CDR 3-second W, the dominance of Duskblade of Draktharr, and the current bruiser meta. Through it all, one thing remains true: a great Zed is never truly out of a game. Your ability to find a pick, to split-push, to outplay, means you always have a path to victory.
Now go. Queue up. Learn to be the Master of Shadows.
