Rare is the occasion when I need to build defensive items on malz, If played well Malz can keep his opponents at a distance and if they do get to you, keep on casting, the Spell Vamp and the AP you have will work quite well. His early game does look squishy but you can out farm your opponent soo easy with this build, Keep on casting Malefic Visions on Creeps, you sometimes catch your opponent.

Magic Penetration is best used if they go MR, In which case grab a void staff, or, if it's just the tank that has MR and none of thier dps... Don't focus the tank! Kill their DPS!

Here is my theory on CDR, The more times that you use your ULT the more kills you get on Malz, plain and simple, without blue at 18, you have CDR capped at 40%, you can just keep casting, and you should!

Way too squishy, no survivability and no magic penetration at all besides sorc boots and marks. Also, what would you gain from CDR quints? Flat AP or health quints benefit you a lot more.
