As a new LOL player who just bought Sona, I found this guide extremely helpful. I've modified both the build and purchase order ever so slightly to fit my personal play style, but I feel I owe 100% of my newfound success with this champion to this guide. Very informative and well written with a build that's super accommodating to newbies, and I hope the author continues to update it.

So far this looks good, but can't vote yet because it's uncomplete. :3 I like your item choices and since you specifically state that this guide is for newbies so I'm not gonna babble how in Ranked games you should aim to build Shurelya's Reverie earlier for the nice active it gives. (Since I don't do it all the time either, can only use it every 60 seconds anyway if I remember correctly). And maybe you will be including this statement in the items section anyway. However I like your item choices and I know there are people who don't like Tear of the Goddess, but I do because Sona can stack it easily and even if you can't get the coins to upgrade it, the mana benefit is still good.
I'll come back to look at this when this is finished. Btw, I've always been scared about accidentally hitting Publish button (luckily haven't done it) so I understand.

Alright, overall seems good, but here are a couple recommendations: (A) I recommend maxing out Powerchord instead it makes Sona a very agressive support. (B) I think the tear is not needed, you'd be better off not buying it at all, or buying a Chalice in replacement. Other than those things it seems alright. Hope I helped and have a tremendous day!

I personally don't care for chalice myself as its effectiveness relies heavily on your current MP/5, but this is mainly supposed to be a "Sona for Dummies" guide. That being said, I've been toying with the idea of switching the early game around a bit to let her initial time in the lane be a bit longer.

You do a very similar build to me as sona and infact its almost exactly the same. The real difference is that i grab a chalice, boots of speed, philo stone, then finish my boots as i see fit. I find that the faire charm makes you have to leave the lane too early so that you leave your carry all alone while a meki pendent into chalice makes sure that everytime your in the lane for as long as you see fit. Just personal preference and it might not be the best but its what i enjoy. Really good guide though and enforced some of the core items in my build.
