Well, you better try out a PS trial so you might be able to translate GIMP-PS a little since it helps.Since I also use gimp :P
But there are many tutorials for sig for gimp but most of them are pretty outdated.
But heres a general guide on making sigs(its long as hell):

GIMP and paint.net are both extremely similar to photoshop. Most tools translate and most filters also translate. If you want specific gimp tutorials though, we have 2 I know of here on mobafire:
Mine
and
Nameless'
Both of these require a bit of basic knowledge of GIMP/PS, but can really help with making sigs.

To be updated soon!
Thanks for the tutorials!

A lot of people say that PS is extremely similar to GIMP and Paint. I see people putting Fractals and C4D in their sigs, i would like to know how to do that.

Well PS has some layer setting superiority and better UI but GIMP can still compete.
But to answer your C4D and Fractals, wireframes textures etc.
You need to first of course download c4d,fractals etc.
Then you copy paste the image on a new layer putting it on "addition" or "screen" in Gimp.
You have to mess with the layer settings more.
I would like to show you my old GIMP tutorial but the site that I put it on doesn't work for now.
(I just don't want to clutter this thread)
