I think it was Nome who resigned from HoN as the SENIOR designer (of everything) to be a champion designer on LoL, pretty funny tbh.

No Xen, they decided together to move back to Cali (where they from), and Riot gave them an offer (probably better than how they were doing at S2)
I'm like 95% sure the original idea for them to leave S2 was not to leave S2 to switch to Riot, but to change location.
Like if they had S2 offices in LA, they'd prolly still be with S2.
