Why does the current meta look like it does? Why is top-jungler-AP mid-supp/ADC bot the best?
I can understand the function of a sustained champ top and a jungler, but why couldn't it work with a sustained AP caster top, jungler, ADC mid, and a bruiser and support bot? Just curious.

ADC's carry the game the most. For that reason, they need to be able to farm a lot, and spend as little money on consumables as possible. Supports fill that role as consumable with a low farm. To get the ADC's power as early as possible, without leaving the ADC vulnerable due to the lack of wards, the support is necessary.

The top lane is one of the easier lanes to gank, since there are less wards in there, and a lot of between the 2 turrets. If you put a squishy AP carry there, it will go fine untill you start to get ganked, and cannot escape all the way back to the turret without losing all your HP, at least, not easily.

In the mid lane, there is much less space between the 2 turrets, making it an easier escape when getting ganked. This is ideal of AP squishies.

Jungler is indeed quite obvious, still a small explanation anyway:
A jungler has its own farm in his jungle, preventing to share that farm with the toplaner.

Of course, there are exceptions.
Like going Vladimir top or Caitlyn mid.

Overal, the 1-1-2 with the supp+ADC bot and the AP mid, seems to work great so far, and is probably the best functioning way to play atm.
Change is gooooood

Well everyone needs the most possible gold, ADCs are not safe solo, champ that needs less gold should be in jungle.

Probably this simple. Makes it clear too that top and mid can swap becouse... well they can.

It is usually not advisable that they swap though. Most mids tend to be high mobility champions, high burst champions, which means that they can capitalize on ganks/ganking. This means that a mid laner has lane presence over bot and top lanes and can gank, has easier access to (blue) buffs, and secure objectives easier.

Wish they told them that tho... on EUNE mid laners usually just sit there and slap eachothers butt, blaming the jungler for everything, or random QQ is theres no jungler, becouse they already QQed for 2-1-2 setup...

In some case the solo top is more mobile and might zone the enemy mid laner easier.

We have these threads every so often. I'll go ahead and repeat most of the wisdom contained in them.

Most AP champs are burst casters. Burst casters don't need much space in lane compared to other champions in order to be very deadly, so they can do well mid lane. Burst casters scale well with level, so they want a solo lane. Most can either roam well or push hard, and mid lane also provides them with the most ability to capitalize on either of these. The reasons that AP casters work so well mid are also why their main replacement is AD casters rather than any other group of champions.

ADCs don't perform well solo, because they are squishy and can't do much until they have items and don't scale well with level; this is why the ADC usually lanes with the support (also so that the support can ward the lane, freeing up more of the ADC's income). The reason they are sent bottom, however, is actually for dragon control. More people near dragon means better dragon control. This is why comps that send their ADC and support top for a while tend to do so with the intent of taking a very early tower, so that they can swap lanes and get more people on dragon before the enemy team is strong enough to capitalize on their better dragon control.

Top lane tends to be dominated by bruisers and offtanks because they lane alone really well, can capitalize on the extra room that top lane provides them over mid, and want to farm up a little before doing anything. Top is really just for whatever you can put there that'll work and that will be useful for the team, though.

Junglers need to be tanky enough to survive in the jungle, have good enough base damages to clear the jungle effectively, have some sort of ability to gank effectively, and do all of these things on a fairly limited income.

Supports don't farm, so they need to be useful to their team without any "real" items (most support items don't provide great selfish stats, even though S3 has helped with support income and item choice). Supports are generally sent with the ADC for reasons listed above.

To deal with the OP: Putting an ADC mid is a bad idea. AP casters generally **** on ADCs early- and mid-game with their superior damage and ability to do real damage even before building several expensive items. An ADC that gets shut down early by an AP caster is likely to have a bad entire game. This actually used to be the meta, and the current AP mid meta took over because it shat on the ADC mid meta.

Bruisers are extremely weak to range (which is why Teemo and Nidalee can be very strong counterpicks top lane) and tend to scale well with level. Putting them in a duo lane against one (or two) ranged champions makes it extremely difficult for them to farm and puts them at a large disadvantage. I wouldn't suggest bruiser/support bottom lane.

Burst casters tend to fall on their face against champions who can just take their burst, which most bruisers and offtanks will probably be able to do due to their superior base tanky stats. The larger lane is also not ideal for burst casters, since they tend to be dead fish for several seconds after using their combo and most top champions could use that time to jump on and kill the caster (or at least drive them out of lane repeatedly).

Putting a bruiser or offtank mid (J4 and Lee spring to mind), sending an ADC top who can really abuse their range advantage and avoid ganks, and sending AP/support bottom to hardcore deny the enemy bottom lane can work in certain situations, if your team is well coordinated.

They should just make a sticky thread with all the explanations for the meta. That would solve the problem of this question being asked once a week. Well more or less. People still ask the "Which champion should I get?" questions in their own threads even though there is a thread already devoted to that.

Thank you Miss Maw, CasterMaster and Arcana3 for the sweet sigs. I'd definitely recommend you to anyone looking for a nice sig.

Simply because we haven't found anything better. Though tbh, sometimes, the roles go in different lanes.
